I just got the V620 today. Previously I had a Sierra aircard with just the National Access.
I installed the VZAccess Manager and Venturi and have been able to connect on broadband mostly at about 51% signal strength, occasionally a little higher.
I went to dslreports and did several tests at different sites. Most had the down speed between about 150 to 190. That seems low to me. One test had download speed of around 490 but nothing else above 190.
Any idea why it is so slow? It isn't awful, but just not as good as I was expecting. Is this simply because of the signal strength or do I need to be doing something else? |

I would try differnet tests at different times of the day to see if you get the same results.
I would disable Venturi when doing benchmarks. Some have disabled it completely, as it can interfere with different software.
Others can chime in on their thoughts. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I've found test that use HUGE files are better. With my cable modem the speed is rather constant, with EVDO it seems to come in cycles and a test with small data transfer might be testing the low end of the cycle.
Keep that statics window open and watch it.
Also, if the connection is dormant before the test that could give you a lower score.
To me the best test of the speed was downloading a 248MB file and seeing what IE gave me as the speed (just remember to convert Kilobytes into Kilobits, you can find tools that do that for you). You can fid huge demo files on most game vendor websites. That is where I noticed how EVDO cycles with speeds while watching the statics graph.
I don't think these speed test work well with EVDO, I would do four different test after each other in a parking lot and get four very different results. |

How is it to use? Is it a lot quicker than your old setup? If it's doing the job, I wouldn't worry too much about the test speeds.
Read through the posts here, there's some excellent advice on some tweaks you can do and you might check into Michael's antenna. |

Well, I've read through most things and am not sure about the tweaks that can be done so any suggestions would be appreciated. I will check into the antenna for use where I get only 1 or 2 bars of strength.
I turned off Venturi and speed went way down.
As for how it is to use... it is much faster than the 1x coverage I had before. So, I am happy with it. On the other hand I am currently testing it out at my office with 100% signal strength (I am in HOuston) and it does seem a little slow given the 100% signal strength. If it could be faster that would be great, but if not it is certainly usable.
There is one very odd thing. When I connect using it, the images on web pages are comming through odd, seemingly to use fewer colors. I tested these by disconnecting and then connecting through my office network and the images were fine. So, this is only when I connect through the V620 card. Any idea why this is and how to fix it? |

Michael is right about the graphics while using Venturi. One of it's tricks is to speed up graphics by reducing the pixels, if you click the icon on the lower right (or right click, I can't remember) you can select the quality of images you recieve.
When you disconnected it, did it test slower or feel slower? Try it for a few days to get a feel without it. My first day with EVDO I experienced not just a slowdown but it simply wouldn't go anywhere. I called tech (in Houston BTW) and the solution was to turn off Venturi. I tried it again when I went from the PC5220 to the V620 and experienced the same erratic performance, haven't used it since.
I don't know how comfortable you are horsing around in the registry but there are some variables you can experiment with to try to tweak your performance. Another way is to download TCPOptimizer from dslreports.com, it will make the adjustments and also make recommendations for (dare I say it) optimal performance.
This is new to all of us and we are all stumbling around trying to figure out what works so stay tuned. |

I will see if I can fix the graphics on Venturi (at least when I want the better graphics). FWIW, when I turned off Venturi for awhile things were slower.
As for messing with the registry, I've sometimes down that for various things although I tend to be cautious. So any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks for the feedback. |
