Hello,
I was recently informed that Alltel covers my home with EVDO. They also stated that soon it will be Rev. A as well, but I won't hold my breath since it is central Wisconsin and why would WE get that before the larger areas???
Anyway, my Alltel rep is telling me that with the KR1 router and their KPC680 card, I will easily pull in the signal from a tower less than 3 miles away. I have a few questions:
1. Is 3 miles an OK distance for Evdo?
2. Are these cards and that router a good match?
3. Could somebody shed some light on the need to reset the KR1 every day or so? The reason I ask is because I have been reading that many people are having to reboot their routers every 12 hours. I really can't deal with that if that is the case.
I currently have satellite and it works great, so I want to do as much research up front. Thanks!

Well I've had a KR1 running a KPC650 for almost 6 months and I have rarely had to reboot the system (maybe once every other week). I download quite a bit and there are 4 other people that use the connection on our LAN. Now that's not to say that the router didn't reboot itself... because it does that quite frequently. If it loses signal or gets into a funk, it will reboot itself, then reconnect.
I just got the KR1/KPC680 combination running earlier today and I haven't had to reboot the system yet. It has rebooted itself probably 4 or 5 times.
As for distance from the tower... I'm probably 6 miles from the closest tower and I have a 58% EVDO signal according to the Alltel QuickLink software. I'm in central Georgia and surrounded by pines. So I can't see 3 miles being a problem at all.
I've used satellite in the past and am much happier with the Alltel connection. Lower ping times and no download limits.
Also, make sure you purchase the Novatel adapter from 3GStore. That's the only adapter that works. |

Has anybody used Skype via Alltel EVDO? Does it work at all? Just curious about that as well...
