I purchased the LInksys Router and Pantech card yesterday, and when I tried installing the router I am unsuccessful Sad

I go through the steps to setup the router, and when I get to step 5 (to check my system) the program crashes around 9-15% everytime. I figured it might be due to something I have running, but when I strip down what boots up with the system (through msconfig) I still error out. I would try installing it in safe mode, however the screen resolution is too small and I can't reach the 'Next' button on the LInksys menu.

Anyone have a clue what the problem may be?

Since I cannot install the software on my laptops (due to lack of administrative access) I need to install it on my desktop (which will be the only computer hooked up via a cable). If nothing will work, am I able to install the software on my parent's computer to get the router to have the proper wireless encryption and then just plug it in on my pc for the direct connection (and have my laptops working at home too)?

Side question: Do I need to install the sprint software if I'm using the router?

your card was preactivated by 3gstore before you picked it up, so there is no need to install the sprint connection manager software on anything, if all you need is to connect a computer to the router.

the default config of the router should have allowed you to simply insert the card in router, plug router power in, and then hit the data button to have the router connect to evdo network, resulting in a blue light on router.

once the blue light is on, all you then need to do is create settings on computer to look for an open wifi hotspot called 'linksys'.

hope this helps. if not, you should definitely call in first thing on monday morning, and our techs will figure out whats going on for you.

thanks Alex....I'm pretty sure that the setup will work on my laptops, I plan to try that out when I get home (I see the blue lights fine).

The problem is on my desktop, which is hooked up to the router by wire. As noted, when I get to step 5 (to check my system) the program crashes around 9-15% and I cannot move further. The next steps are the ones to setup the wireless network and most importantly apply encryption. Since I cannot install the software on teh laptop, is there any other way to get the encryption to work?

There must be some software on my pc that is causing the Linksys installer to crash, but I haven't had any luck when trying to disable programs in msconfig. I don't think the problem is with the hardware.

As previously asked, i nothing will work am I able to install the software on my parent's computer to get the router to have the proper wireless encryption and then just plug it in on my pc for the direct connection (and have my laptops working at home too)? How will the pc at home detect the internet? (it doesn't work now, maybe it has something to do with my current ethernet card...but that shouldn't cause the system to crash, right?)

I'll check back tomorrow, I know I posted a lot of questions but any help would be appreciated!

thing is, by default, you should be able to just connect your desktop to ethernet port of linksys, and have the desktop acquire an ip address via dhcp.

there should not be a need to install any software on desktop, nor should there be a need to run any 'steps to install the router'.

admin of the router can be done via web browser. you don't need to install software on any computer to change settings on the router.

i'm probably missing something obvious, and i know our tech support guys will be able to help you through it on monday.

I'm at home and my laptop is connected (unless some other wireless network is called 'linksys').

How am I able to change the router's permissions from the laptop w/o the linksys software?

don't have it memorized and don't have a linksys running at the moment,
but look at your printed manual about accessing web admin via browser.

its probably by going to http://192.168.1.1/ in a web browser and using admin as password (blank username)

(again, thats from memory)

thanks (again)...I'm now secured and can worry about my desktop later.

Since I have you "on the line" is it not recommended to have WEP security? It seems that isn't the most secure, but should I have to worry about that?

You might have to use "admin" as username too. I had to on mine anyway.
