I live in Jacksonville, FL (SID 5667) and am getting some very slow connects. I would say 90% of the time I get about 40Kbps and the rest of the time I get 500 - 700Kbps. I have a Motorola Q and have tried several different PRLs. 40007, 40023 and 40020. All produce the same results. I am starting to see a pattern in the IP addresses I am assigned and the speeds.

Here is a list of IPs and the speeds I get with them:

Code:
166.166.16.xxx  -   411Kbps
166.166.18.xxx  -   432Kbps
166.166.96.xxx  -   638Kbps
166.166.98.xxx  -   564Kbps
166.166.99.xxx  -   599Kbps
166.166.99.xxx  -   542Kbps
98.132.80.xxx     -  41Kbps (1xRTT)
166.166.104.xxx -   580Kbps
166.166.110.xxx -   730Kbps
166.166.113.xxx - Timed Out
166.166.113.xxx - Timed Out
166.166.114.xxx -    73Kbps
166.166.116.xxx -    23Kbps
166.166.126.xxx - Timed Out
166.166.218.xxx -    90Kbps
166.166.121.xxx - Timed Out
166.166.221.xxx - Timed Out
166.166.222.xxx -   110Kbps
166.166.222.xxx -    18Kbps
166.166.227.xxx - Timed Out

If the phone is slow I can simply turn the radio off and then back on and it will get a new IP. I just keep doing this and documenting the IP and speed obtained. Once it is fast, it will be fast for the rest of the day as long as it keeps the same IP. If it is slow, it will be slow all day. This isn't a coverage problem either because I can be in the same location and be fast or slow all day.

I have been documenting the IPs and speeds for about 3 weeks now and have found that IPs above 166.166.110.xxx are slow and IPs equal or lower then 166.166.110.xxx are fast. The IPs listed above are just a few of the ones I have documented. I have tested and documented over 100 times and there is no question that the connection is ALWAY slow if the IP is above that threshold and ALWAY fast if below.

It is as if Alltel has different proxy servers, routers or something like that handling the different IP ranges. I don't know if it is unique to my market or unique to any Alltel customer that is roaming on Sprint.

I would really like to here from other customers that roam Sprint or better yet other people in Jacksonville, FL.

This is driving me crazy.

It's funny because I was in my Alltel store a few days after Alltel pushed 40020 to the Treo's and I noticed that the manager at the store had a Treo so I asked him if he got 40020. He said yes. I asked him how he liked it. He said, "well at first it wasn't any faster but then the next day it was fast". At that point I didn't know how to load PRLs on the Q so I was still running 1X and figured his speed fluctuations where simply signal related. Well now that I have 40020 on my Q I can say there is more to the speed fluctuation then signal.

Oh also, My wife has a Q and I have the same results on her phone so it isn't my phone. I have also done a master reset on the phone to prove that it wasn't an app or something I added or changed that causes the slow downs.

I have posted at HoFo several times about this problem and get no response. This forum looks to be more knowledgeable about IP then HoFo. HoFo is more phone hacking oriented. Maybe I will get more feed back on this forum. Smile

Thanks!

Well as I suspected. My problems were not tower/sig related. It had to do with one of Alltel's internet carriers. Towertester from HoFo confirmed that they made some changes that should fix the slow downs when roaming on Sprint. My speeds aren't as good as before but at least its usable again. I got about 500 - 600kpbs average before and now I get about 300kbps average. Much better then the 10 - 40kbps I was getting for the last month.
