|
|
Hi,
I am about to sign up with Alltel for internet because they have the best signal in my area. I am trying to figure out which combination of card / router that I can buy so that
1) The card will be Rev A and
2) The card and router will be compatible and stable
I have read on the forum that some users have the PC 5750 with the Linksys WRT54G3G-ST working, but some reported instability. Since those postings are a little dated, has anyone had any recent experience with this combination?
Of course there's the KPC 680 with the Kyocera KR 1, but it looks from the forum like I'd have to wait for an adapter to come out. However, I need internet access now, so this doesn't seem like an option.
If anyone has experience with any Rev A card that I can buy and use with a specific router with Alltel service, please help me out!
Thanks,
Ian |

I'm using the 5750 with the Linksys router (since March) and am entirely satisfied. Turns out most of the quirks I once attributed to the router were really caused by something else. My remaining complaint is that when DO disappears I have a much harder time getting a lock on 1x when the card is in the router (I can still connect if the card is in my old laptop).
However, I've never had the expectation that the service was going to be always on 24/7 like dsl or cable. After reading alltel's tos I figured this was going to be more like dial-up with better throughput. Maybe it's better to have lower expectations sometimes! |

Thanks for the input.
Do you know if the D-link router will work with the PC5750 since I'm curious about all of my Rev A options? |

When I bought my 5750 the D-Link router didn't support it but I see there was a firmware update in May that added support for the Pantech PX-500 aircard -- which is almost identical (my 5750 uses the Pantech drivers).
On the other hand, D-Link makes the Kyocera router -- and that makes me wonder if the D-Link has the same radio interference problem as the Kyocera (the wi-fi radio interferes with the aircard radio).
You might be able to find a D-Link at Best Buy (or Radio Shack?). Since it's also less expensive than the Linksys it seems like that's definitely worth a try. |

I have the dlink with the 5750. I thought there was a wireless network interference issue, but I'm not sure now, because I found I needed to tweak my antenna aiming to make a more consistent connection. In fact, I think the tower that alltel told me was the evdo tower either was not the one, or they switched (this tower had issues recently, and there's another tower about 3 miles south).
So far, so good, with only one disconnect per day the past 2 days at most. I think that's either the 12 hour disconnect (although I can't time it like others have), or a hiccup. |

Make sure of the return policy if not satisfied
I have the PC 5750 and the Linksys WRT54G3G-ST {purchased here} works great
Running 24/7
I have the 12hr disconnect issue [not a router issue}
Speeds vary for me

I am not sure if you have a laptop or not, but if you don't be sure to activate the card at the store. That way you can just plug it into your router and go. I don't think you can activate the datacard through the router.
I don't have a router, I just use it in my PC, so take my info with a grain of salt. |

| Ansar is right. You can't do any of the activation, settings updates, etc in the router, so make sure you either get it done in store, or have a laptop or pc card reader in your pc. |

| I know that they sale the PC5750 and also the KPC680 Both are revA But I wonder which will work in the KR1?? I want to switch over to the newer cards, but I have heard that the KPC-680 needs an adapter and the antenna hook-up is different too! |

| The pc5750 should work with KR1, you just need the latest firmware, by all accounts. |

ansar and jfarris:
You may be right that you can't activate the aircard while it's in the router.
But you CAN update it in the router.
That's how my KPC650 in a DIR-450 router was updated.

Capt Dan:
Did you read the replies before you posted yours?
The express card-to-pcmcia adapter can be purchased at Newegg
The antenna adapter can be purchased at maximumsignal.com

jfarris:
are you sure about the 5750 and kr1? the latest that i read on this forum, there are problems using it with the wireless enabled on the kr1.
thorcomm:
yes, there is an adapter on newegg, but that does not mean that it works with the kr1 or linksys if no one has tried it. From what I have been reading on the forums, no on has the KPC680 working in any of the routers yet. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
So the conclusion still seems to be Linksys router with 5750. any objections? |

I was just suggesting ways to get a KPC680 working in a router, since that is what you indicated you wanted to do.
Why you think the adapter wouldn't work is your decision.
"any objections"
What is that supposed to mean?
Otherwise, have a great day!

Supposedly there are physical size limitations when using an adapter in a router. This is just what I have read, since I don't have one. |
