Can an Alltel user roam on Verizon & Sprint's networks for EVDO?

You can roam on Sprint's EVDO network, but not Verizons. I believe the only roaming contracts between Alltel and Verizon is for 1xRTT.
Heh, maybe it is Sprint that has 1xRTT roaming contracts with Verizon... I am getting them mixed up. Either way, there are no roaming contracts for EVDO with Alltel and Verizon. |

| You can roam off of Sprint but not Verizon using EVDO. I haven't been able to roam on Sprint's EVDO network using a tethered phone with the present PRL 30008. [/quote] |

That's good to know with Sprint. Will this be automatic roaming?, and with the EV symbol pop up? I was on business in Memphis last month and only got a D for digital I think. Also travel to the Baltimore, Annapolis MD area quite frequently. Of course I didn't have the PPC 8600 phone then (only E815).
Would hate not to be able to use broadband data.

| I don't know about the PPC 8600, but I have an E815 and it only works on an Alltel EVDO network. |

So far the only devices Alltel has pushed the PRL that allows roaming on Sprint EVDO to are the data cards and the Treo 700's. PRL 30008 will NOT roam on Sprint EVDO. It's 40020 and 40023 or something in that range. (Can't remember the exact PRL) Some folks have been able to manually load the 40020/40023 PRL on other devices though. My Q is still on 30008 but I know of a guy from another forum who has loaded the new PRL on his Q and is successfully roaming on Sprint EVDO.
Since the PPC6800 is so new I have no idea what PRL it has. Anyone who has one already might shed some light on that for us. (It's only been out since last Thursday)
As far as it being automatic the answer is yes. The way a PRL works is it lists the order in which the device will "look" for a signal. The new 40020/40023 PRL looks for Alltel EVDO, Sprint EVDO, Alltel 1xrtt, Sprint 1xrtt, Verizon 1xrtt and then any others they may have an agreement with depending on specific geographic areas.
Therefore if Alltel EVDO isn't available where you are and Sprint EVDO is it will automatically connect to Sprint EVDO. The cool thing is it's getting to be harder and harder to find an area that doesn't have one or the other these days. |

| The PRL on my 6800 is 30008. That's what worries me. |

I wouldn't worry too much. The PRL for Sprint EVDO roaming will be pushed out to all other capable Alltel devices pretty soon as I understand it. You have to remember this is a first (and ONLY as of right now) in the industry and is really just now getting rolling although the agreement has been there for several months now. Just hang on a bit.
Or you can learn how to manually load the PRL on your new 6800 and go to http://corolada.com/prl/ to download PRL 40023 and slap it on there yourself. I'm sure there's a forum somewhere that will give you the how-to's. Sprint has had the 6800 under the name Mogul for several weeks now so I'm sure someone has figured out how to do a manual PRL load by now. Good luck! |

| Thanks. I've done the PRL update, so I guess I'll be set until Alltell pushes out the new PRL (when its available for the 6800) |

Bigdave is right yet again! The 40020 and 40023 are currently the only PRLs that roam on Sprint's EVDO network. Engineers say they are testing a new PRL for regular devices. If I hear anything new I will post it for you all. _________________ Alltel Wireless |

When I spoke with Alltel reps they told me they roam on Verizon EVDO's network and when I asked Verizon this they confirm this is true....
and yet when I had Verizon I was getting 1.2 Mps download speeds and with Alltel I am getting ... 300 kps download speed...
any ideas? |

I work for Alltel, and I am telling you that we do NOT roam off Verizon EVDO. Go into a store and we can prove it to you. There is no such agreement with Verizon. Email me your mobile number and I can see who you have been talking to at customer service so I can correct them.
We currently only share EV with Sprint.

FWIW, I have been given erroneous information by both local reps and cs reps on numerous occasions. Head over to alltel.howardforums.com and ask about the Verizon-Alltel EvDO roaming agreement. The Alltel folks on that forum are a knowledgeable bunch and you'll get the correct information.
[Edited to add -- I see that you've been to HoFo already -- try starting a topic with "Alltel-Verizon EvDO roaming agreement" in the subject.]
And some food for thought -- if Verizon caps their own users at 5 gigs why would they allow someone roaming from Alltel to exceed that limit? |

Hey Jason,
Thanks for the honesty. I eventually got through to a Data Tier 3 tech and he told me the same thing. He also mentioned there is no idea at this time if Rev A is coming by the end of the year or not and only select Alltel towers will receive. He mentioned their agreement with Sprint is only Rev 0 :\
is Alltel going to be getting Rev A? and do you think they will get an agreement with Sprint for Sprints Rev A? |

Jason, can you confirm that Alltel customers can ONLY roam on Sprint at Rev-0 speeds (and vice versa)?
Can you provide a link to some official press release about Alltel's roaming agreements with Sprint and Verizon? |
