|
|
Hello,
I just ordered a $25 PCI to PCMCIA adapter card that others have said works with the PC 5220 card (probably others as well). After I get it and had time to play with it, I will post my results in this thread.
If anyone is already using this adapter (or knows of others), please post them in this thread. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Someone at EVDOInfo.com added a comment that the card DOES WORK. Hopefully, they will post additional information in this thread with details. So for now, I am not sure if it works or not. It did not on my hardware, it may work on yours.
Hopefully, more information by others posted here. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

The Koutech adapter is currently working for me on 3 different PC's. One uses a recent Soyo motherboard, the other 2 use different older Asus motherboards.
It won't work on 2 PC's built with more recent Asus motherboards.
I don't know if it's a BIOS issue or what - I stopped trying to figure it out once it worked. It's not the OS, because it works (or doesn't work) with both Windows XP, and Linux.
I've used the adapter daily since January with the PC5220 and an Asus-based PC hooked up to a Linksys router to share the connection on a mixed ethernet and wireless g network. |

I bought a Belkin wireless adapter which includes the PCMCIA adapter and new wireless pc card that supports the Pre-N wireless (supposedly 600% faster than g wireless).
You can find it here: http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail.asp?dpno=519581
I was thinking I could use it to put my desktop on my wireless network, and I can use the EVDO card as backup broadband.
The EVDO card worked, but it required a wireless adapter to be running at the same time, because it somehow utilizes the connection. I only worked with it for a minute, but in order to get it to work, I had to install my other USB wireless adapter. It doesn't really make sense to me yet, but it did work. If I remove the wireless adapter, everything installs and loads up but doesn't connect... The connection manager displays a message about the missing wireless connection.
If I have time to play with it later, I'll post an update, but maybe that info will help someone. For me, it looks like I might even have to install a second PCMCIA adapter (if I want to use the new Belkin card). So, if you're thinking as I did about the Belkin adapter, keep this in mind... |

| Michael wrote: | | The PCI PCMCIA Adapter from NewEgg, DOES NOT WORK. | Hmmm, I suspect it is motherboard related. I'm using one in an old Intel 440LX motherboard. I have the system loaded with NetBSD acting as a firewall. The trick to getting the card recognized with a usable driver for the PC5220 can be found here.
UPDATE: My Cardbus adaptor uses the Ricoh 5C485 chip. There are also Ricoh 5C465 and 5C475 chips out there, so your mileage may very.

| I am using it on an old PC with 440BX chipset. If you go to Siig.com, it is their "PCI to PC Card Pro" |

Update on the PCI card.
The card from Amazon also didn't work. From what others are saying, it is related to my PC and not the card. So, if you are trying to use EVDO in your desktop, make sure that there is a return policy for the card you purchase.
I also tried the Amazon card in the Mac G5, and it didn't even fit.
I tried the first PCI PCMCIA card in the G5 again, and it was recognized, but it looked like, the PC 5220 card was not getting any power. I plugged in a known good WiFi PC Card and it didn't get power either.
So, in summary, it is working for many others, I had some problems, you may or may not have problems.... depends on your PC. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

This was my fault... when setting it up, I selected for the VZAccess Manager to manage both kinds of connections.
So, in case anyone's interested, I'm using the Belkin Pre-N wireless which comes with a PC Card adapter. If my DSL goes out, I can just pop-out the Belkin card and put in my V620 and I'm back online.
I also ordered the SIIG card through Buy.com for around $30
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10357058
I've tried that card with my other desktop, and the V620 works with it as well. Both systems are Windows XP Pro. |

I took a chance and got the card from New Egg and it worked for me. My PC is one of those MSI Mega PCs running XP Media Center Edition (2004, I think).
Edit: (with a v620) |
