Quick rule when talking to those types: Never tell them anything other than the basics. Many of them just look for one thing out of the ordinary to allow them to bail on the call. Never mention the router, unless it's an absolute afterthought. |

| Does anyone know Alltel's stand on this? I'd call myself to find out, but the card is registered in my company's name, so I don't think they will talk to me. |

If you're talking about router, what I've gotten from Alltel is that if it's only the router having problems, then they will push it off on the router itself. Most of the time, this would be correct. However, they will ask if you're having problems with the quicklink software running the card, at least from my experience, before writing it off as an environment issue. |

I called last week according to Data Tech he said it was standard
I asked why a few of my relatives did not have the 12hr disconnect issue Data Tech stated all Alltel air cards were to reset @ 12 hours
My card disconnects at exactly 12 hours no matter where it's plugged in at
I even tried keep alive pro on my laptop didn't work
My theory is for various reasons Alltel doesn't want anyone running 24/7 on the same IP |

| I'd have to disagree with that data tech. Mine virtually NEVER disconnects in or out of the router. Been connected in a laptop straight through for about a week now. Normally it's in the KR1 but was wanting to see what would happen in the laptop . . . . . so far so good. |

I don't know about the IP idea. My IP changes much sooner than 12 hours. Of course, I need to see what is happening with the yagi, because the connection seems less likely to fade than it did with my omni. But it changed IPs even without a disconnect. |

Hey Dave, does your router have a setting to automatically reconnect if the connection is lost? Also, are there any logs that might show reconnections. I don't have a router, so I am just speculating. |

Interesting
I've never noticed mine changing unless I reconnect
I'll watch |

I didn't agree with him either, I'm hoping maybe someone here will try to call and see what answer is given.
I do not have a KR1 to try both my Linksys & laptop are DOA on the 12th hour
Somewhere there is a pattern as to why some disconnect and some don't |

suasion,
I notice that you are using a PC5750 and a WRT54G3G-ST. Have you had any other problems using the Linksys router other than the 12 hr. disconnect? I've got a 5750 on the way and trying to decide on a router. I like the reliabliity of the Linksys but also the alleged versatility of the KR1. The more I read the less the I know. |

I too tried to research and decide between the KR1 and WRT54G3G-ST
No problems with the Linksys it was an easy setup. Works great with the PC5750
No upload/download issues I can't blame the 12hr disconnect on the router |

| I just bought a KR1 off ebay for less than half the price of the WRT54G3G-ST so I guess I'll give it a try. If the results aren't there, I can always throw more money at it and go the Linksys route. Thanks for the feedback. |

I wouldnt care about the 12 hr issue as long as I didn't have to actually reboot the router. If it would just drop connection and reconnect, I'd be fine with it. I work late every night and havent had time to call Alltel yet about this issue. |

Ok I finally have an update and this is the one that makes the most sense to me as a former network engineer. Alltel has a 12 hour timeout in select areas determined to have heavy network congestion. This would explain why some people are affected and some people are not. The fact that the PC5740 doesn't have issues is irrelevant UNLESS it's connecting to the same tower that the PC5750 is and we don't have any evidence of that to present to Alltel. It also explains why those having problems with the PC5750 in the router would also have problems with it in a laptop.
I went on to explain to the tech that their implementation was poorly designed - you don't time out a connection without disconnecting it. He tried to say that would be a function of the router and he may very well be correct but to the best of my knowledge at least when it comes to dialup connections, the remote side usually hangs up the connection when a specified time limit it reached. The tech said he would pass it up to his supervisor as he understands what a huge inconvenience it is to have to reboot the router every 12 hours. I again explained that would be appreciated and to pass along the fact, I wouldn't care to be disconnected at a set number of hours but at least disconnect me so that the router can reconnect and I don't have to keep rebooting.
For those who have a card that locks up multiple times per day, it's possible the network traffic in your area is VERY conjested and the timeout policy is much more strict.
I hope this helps. Sorry it's taken so long for me to call and talk with them but this is my first day off in a long time |
