|

Does anyone know of a product that can be used to limit a child's acces time ?
The situation as I understand it: My friends have children.
They are all on the same router for internet access.
They want to control how much time the kids spend on the internet. But they don't want to have to manually monitor and time the connections.
Is there some gadget that can be placed between the kid's computers and the router, that will keep track of how much time is spent on the net, and will disconnect just that computer after the allotted amount of time ?
Any other suggestions ? (I suggested getting the kids their own router and putting it's power supply on a timer. But that just leads to hassles about the 'schedule'...) |

I used to use some pretty cool software that was a proxy.
I could, limit the times by day of week
ban specific sites
ban specific sites with specific words in the url or page content
A log was kept on everything (where they have been).
It was a WIndows XP application, and it ran in a the background.
It would help, if you locked down the Windows or Mac computer, so the child couldn't disable the proxy settings
Oh yeah, it was a lot of fun adding all the words to the banned word list
I will try to dig up the name of the software.
It would be pretty cool, if one of the router manufacturers embedded this feature directly into their router. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Thank you for the quick response, Michael.
The kids are teenagers. I think anything that was software, would be quickly disabled by them. Especially if it had to be installed on their own computer.
Still, I think their kids are probably less likely than most, to try to go around whatever limits their parents put on the connection. So thank you in advance for the name of the software.
It WOULD be cool if the router itself had some way to control the individual connections through it. |
