Would a 595U work on 2 computers using a direct connection between the 2 computers usings a crossover network cable to share the internet connection?

Yes. Though it's usually worth spending the $15 to $20 for an ethernet switch. There's always something that gets added to a network later.

I've only gotten switches to supply internet to 1 thing at a time though. maybe I'm not setting it up right. Like if my computer is on the net x-box won't be able to with switch, or my both computers are trying to connect one won't able to

You can share your internet connection on a Windows PC with many other computers. You just need to configure ICS in WIndows to due so. THis will work with an EVDO modem as well. I used to have 3 computers sharing the EVDO connection using my server. So one computer with the EVDO modem, on Ethernet switch, 3 additional computers. It is fairly easy to set up, although it can sometimes be somewhat "quirky" at times.
