I was doing some reading and poking around the web about the last revision to date of EVDO, revision C, and I found this kind of interesting. Anywhere you go, you'll probably read the EVDO revC was renamed to Ultra Mobile Broadband in 2006, but if you read up on UMB, it says from Qualcomm that it is based on OFDM-MIMO technologies, not CDMA2000 legacy networks. Is this right, and if so, doesn't it basically mean that revC/UMB WON'T be compatible with past EVDO revisions (and maybe that was the reason for the name change).

If this was the case, it would somewhat make sense because Qualcomm acquired Flarion (creators of FLASH-OFDM) and also the market is moving away from CDMA2000 legacy/heritage technologies for OFDM.

And as an aside, it seems like with the rapid growth of mobility technologies, there's almost no time to roll out a network to the point that a overarching standard becomes ubiqituous like when CDMA first became popular back in the IS-95 days. Or maybe I just didn't notice that it was the same at that time as well.

Found this article. Kinda interesting.

Pretty much confirms everything I said. Market is moving away from CDMA for 4G, and UMB/EVDO revC is included in that mix.
