Xohm, the mother of all dragons...
http://www.stuffoflegend.com/Ambar/07Religions/2GodsofAmbar/EarthMother/xohm?single=1
Seems to only create confusion. If someone buys a WiMAX device, they should know that it works with WiMAX networks, not exclusive to XOHM. Just call it WiMAX. It's like ATT coming out with their own WiFi product and calling it one thing and another WiFi vendor calling it yet another. It would create confusion as if the device purchased would not work with other WiFi networks.
Sprint, don't be cute and just call it WiMAX. |

this is true, but if Sprint calls it this, chances are Clearwire will call it this...and well, let's be honest; between the two, they'll most likely dominate the entire WiMAX field. (Also, if XOHM takes off, I wouldn't be surprised if Sprint bought out/merged with Clearwire).
I'm thinking that XOHM might actually be an acronym for something...though I'm not sure. |

What does everyone think the chances are for Sprint to have an upgrade path for existing EVDO customers to WiMAX?
As a new Sprint customer, I don't have any experience with them. When a new technology comes out, do they have a reasonable upgrade path, or do they try to milk existing customers for everything they can get? I'm thinking of folks who signed up for 1xRTT just before EVDO-A became prevalent. Did Sprint hold them to their original contract (make 'em pay the early-out penalty), or give them a way to move to EVDO?
Just curious...

A few comments from Rueters
| Quote: | | (Sprint) expects coverage to expand to 125 million people by 2010 at an additional cost of $2.5 billion, bringing the total network spend to $5 billion. |
So, by 2010, 125 million will be able to get Xohm/WiMax. Right now, 203 million can get Sprint EVDO.
So, while these announcements are exciting, they are only announcements and over the next 3 years, only 1/2 (roughly) the people that currently get EVDO will be able to get Xohm/WiMax.
So, stick with EVDO until Xohm/WiMax is available in your area the next 3 (or so) years.
Will there be an upgrade path?

rlw, Sprint will force you to pay. I bought their EVDO service while in New Mexico where I winter. They said not to worry it would work in Alaska any where my cell phone worked. They lied. I can't get anything here with the wireless modem. They won't let me out of my contract and I have to pay a vacation rate the 7 months I'm in Alaska.
Verizon works in Alaska. But I will have to pay for both services if I want a provider that can deliver.

Who told you EVDO worked in Alaska? A store or phone rep? 1xRTT might work there, but the coverage maps have always shown that sprint native EVDO coverage in Alaska is zero. I'm surprised they will not release you from contact. If the service is not available, I thought they were required to provide early termination without fee. Perhaps because 1xRTT is there?
Definitely sure though, buyrt beware. I'm assuming you didn't get it in the 30 day trial period? |

Actually the 203m pop coverage is for RevA. The Rev0 coverage is around 210m or so, probably higher now as they said 230m pop coverage should be completed by end of 2007.
Sprint said they are coming out with EVDO/WiMAX combo cards so you'd think it could be just a card upgrade on your existing EVDO account. Even they probably don't have the details nailed down yet. They have said in the past they would not subsidize WiMAX devices but I'd think they'd have to do so for a while to kickstart the service. But otherwise, it could be $200-$300 per card until mass production. There was also talk the service would start at $50/month and go down with mass adoption, so paying full price for cards may not be that bad.
100m coverage for WiMAX isn't much in terms of area, but is 1/3 of US population. We may not see WiMAX covering entire metro areas for a while but rather the denser parts or areas with economically stronger demographics. EVDO will still be a reasonable backup for areas that don't have WiMAX.
All of this is just my speculation. |
