WiMAX in Chicago/DC may already be running, just not officially sold to consumers. So if you buy a device and register it in Baltimore, it may work in Chicago and DC. I also hear many sites are up and running in Dallas. Just don't ask for any tech support in unofficial markets.
Why should it work? When EVDO first started coming out and they had it in only 5 markets, my card still worked with EVDO when traveling in markets that weren't officially released yet.
Michael, you should give it a shot. Are you going to WiMAX World this week? |

Cool. You may have to start in downtown Dallas, or the hoods around upper end office/business corridors. <wink wink>
One big reason Sprint is starting in Baltimore is because the metro is the smallest of the first set of cities, so customer support can start out with a smaller base and not be inundated with calls. The networks though are supposedly ready or near ready in the first several markets, with varying degrees of coverage. They just want to give customer support some experience before opening it up to other markets. |

We already have 2 Chicago employees and 1 in Dallas that have XOHM on order. I hope to have mine today or tomorrow for testing. Yes, I am going to WiMAX World on Thursday, bet it works there _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Sprint-Clearwire WiMAX venture Not On FCC October Meeting Agenda
September 29, 2008 InternetNews
| Quote: | Also not on the FCC October meeting agenda is the proposed Sprint-Clearwire WiMAX venture announced in early May.
The FCC said that deal is in the same position as the Verizon-Alltel proposal in terms of regulatory review. Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) and Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR) aim to join forces in a $14.5 billion WiMAX network venture, in which Sprint will own 51 percent of the new company that will be called Clearwire.
Sprint told InternetNews.com is not concerned the proposal is not on the next FCC agenda, noting that the formal regulatory comment period has concluded.
"We are pleased with the tremendous support from approximately 150 industry, consumer, educational and other groups for the new Clearwire," said a Sprint spokesperson.
"We believe the regulatory process is on track and expect the transaction, which will speed the deployment of the first nationwide next-generation mobile WiMAX network to close in the fourth quarter of this year." |

Xohm has also been detected in Philly with the Nokia WiMAX tablet, but the user didn't have an account to login with...

There might need to be a thread on Xohm sightings. How about a 4gmaps.com like evdomaps.com? |

There are some results appearing on dslreports.com that claim to be Xohm tests. I'm surprised they would use the spcsnet domain though.
down/up 3.4m/304
Sprint Mobile Broadband Herndon, VA, USA
Comment: XOHM with RSSI -79 dBM ~3 bars out of 5

There are others up to 6Mbps downlink, but sometimes EVDO users using AOL proxy can show that high. |

If you've checked out the coverage using XOHM.com's coverage map, you've probably noticed that it offers you two different search options: "Modem" and "Mobile Device" coverage. The coverage looks different depending on which one you choose!!
It seems like a very confusing way to set up their maps, as they offer zero explanation as to what the difference is. After THREE phone calls to XOHM, it was finally explained that the "home modem" offers a much wider range due to its powerful internal antennas - hence the difference in coverage range.

The folks at EVDOinfo have detected WiMAX in Chicago, using the Zyxel Home Modem. Check out the image below - the LED indicators don't lie!

Very interesting; hopefully they'll expand into Ohio quickly *chuckles*
EVDO in my area has been crap since August of '07...hopefully XOHM will be way better.
I'm really interested to see what the latency is like with the service, but not enough results are in yet. |

I'm curious that the DC launch appears to include Herndon (a good 45-60 mins West of DC proper). I wonder just how far it extends currently and how far it will extend past the officially lit areas by the end of the year. _________________ --Larry |

| Ah, 11ms did sound unrealistic. Speedtest.net doesn't show accurate pings though. I wonder if he used the ping tool in the connection mgr. |

the best way to test ping (well, IMO anyway) is to open up command prompt and to ping Google for a bit.
if you're seeing pings in the 100's for speedtest.net, I'd guess that real ping times are 10-30 ms lower than that....so, if XOHM has a latency of around 70 ms to Google, that wouldn't be too bad. Still nothing to celebrate about, but it would be better than EVDO Revision A. |
