Tucson is on the original list of cities for a 2009-2010 launch.
Madison, Milwaukee, Orlando, Cape Coral, West Palm Beach, Miami, Tucson, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita, Lansing, Columbus, Richmond, Virginia Beach and Toledo.
I just double checked and found Richmond was left off the list in the first post. The original article said the cities listed only represented the main metro areas and is not a complete depiction of the coverage. They also cautioned that the plan was subject to change. |

A Legal challenge trying to block Sprint-Clearwire WiMax JV moves forward
| Quote: | | Sprint appears to have suffered another legal setback with a company attempting to block its pending WiMax deal with Clearwire. iPCS, a smaller wireless company selling Sprint-branded wireless service, filed a lawsuit earlier this year claiming that Sprint’s deal with Clearwire would breach exclusivity agreements Sprint made with iPCS. Sprint asked the Circuit Court of Cook County Illinois to dismiss the case. On Monday, according to iPCS, the court denied Sprint’s request. | http://sprintconnection.kansascity.com/?q=node/796 |

Sprint-ClearWire WiMax needs to have a nationwide successful rapid roll out without delay, LTE is nipping at your heels.
T-Mobile-Nortel have successfully tested LTE in a moving car. They achieved data rates of 170 Mbit/s down and 50 Mbit/s up.

A successful test and a nationwide rollout with supporting network and user hardware and software are two VERY different things. Any measure of'nipping' needs to include this difference.
In order to provide the maximum rates touted for either WiMax or LTE, there needs to be awfully good signal over the intended area. For the 75 Mbps number often quoted for WiMax or the numbers given above for LTE, there needs to be a lot higher signal to the mobile device than is required for a voice call. The -100 dBm kinds of numbers usable for voice won't cut it.
As a comparison, the faster flavors of 802.11 need -60 to -70 dBm sorts of RSSI in order to work. I don't believe that LTE or WiMax are going to be vastly different in this respect. If one looks at the footprints of current cellular providers to see where signals are that strong, it will be obvious that the coverage area is *much* smaller than even the already-reduced coverage areas of their particular flavor of broadband data; EVDO, HSDPA or whatever.
I don't believe it likely to see a truly nationwide rollout of any of these anytime soon. The required 10X to 100X increase in cell site density is prohibitively expensive, even if the providers could get the zoning permitted.

Xohm to release Oct 6? Prices to be announced Sep 26?
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Xohm-Baltimore-Launch-October-6-97821
Someone who claims to be on the inside claims there will be no caps. Makes sense they would start the service with no caps when there is zero load in the beginning. But they could always add one later. Will have to be competitive though to grow the service.
Looking forward to EVDO/WiMAX combo cards expected to come by the end of the year. I was thinking through how the pricing would work and my guess is that WiMAX only will be $50/month or less and a combo card will be the same as EVDO at typical $60/month. You can only be using one network at a time so it would make sense to charge for the higher one rather than the cost of the two combined. |

| "Xohm to release Oct 6?" Another Sprint WiMax delay? Xohm President Barry West said Baltimore was ready to launch in September. |

First Dual Mode WiMax EVDO USB Dongle
| Quote: | | C-Motech showed off the world’s first dual mode WiMax EVDO USB dongle at CTIA Wireless 2008 and it’s quite a versatile little bugger. In fact, the CMU-300 supports the WiMax standard of IEEE 802.16e-2005 and EVDO Rev A. The super good news is C-Motech has just made a deal with a carrier in the U.S. so those of us on the Stateside will get access to this dual-mode adapter sometime in November. |

If Sprint were smart (gotta sometimes wonder if they are), they should ONLY sell WiMAX/EVDO combo cards once available in all formats and dump 3G/2G only cards. When 3G cards came around, they stopped selling 2G only cards afterall. And when RevA cards came around, they stopped selling Rev0 cards fairly soon after.
This may essentially force the other 3G card makers to get into WiMAX. Neither Sierra nor Novatel have announced any WiMAX plans yet.
WiMAX only a few weeks away... can almost taste it. |

| No, I'm almost positive the old routers will not supprt the new service. But, it looks like you dont have to get a USB dongle for the new service. |

You'd think it would just require a firmware upgrade for routers. The login methods into the network will be different but the hardware connection type won't be any different than plugging a WiMAX or EVDO card into a laptop. The difference should just be software. You'd think anywho.
It's up to the router maker to support WiMAX. But some may decide not to upgrade the firmware for older routers in order to sell newer models. If the latter, open source router firmware could possibly take up the slack. |

cradlepoint has told us they plan on firmware updates to support wimax, but cannot promise this until a 'mainstream' wimax deployment exists, that they can test on. |
