I just received my Wilson Omni Trucker Antenna via FedEx today, installed it, and only gaining a slight signal increase (-85 dBm to -81 dBm) and hardly any speed increase (+/- 50 kbps). I installed the antenna on the top of my house (12 foot included cord) on the same pole as my T.V. antenna about 1 foot off the roof. Is it possible that the T.V antenna is causing interference w/ the Wilson? I would really like to get more performance out of this antenna, is there any tips, insights, clues as to why I am hardly gaining any signal.

Thanks in advance!

Joel

Did you try the antenna out before mounting it? I would try different locations. Personally, I am actually getting a better signal out one of my windows than I did testing the signal on a pole in different location outside my house.

Alex,

I only screwed in the ground plane spikes w/ my hand, even though they seem to be secured pretty tight, I will make them more snug w/ some tools.

ansar,

I hardly tried out the antenna before mounting it on my roof. I am kinda restricted (12ft. cable) as well as I would like to keep my Server (ICS) in my attic. I will try moving the antenna as much as possible!

Thanks for the suggestions, any more are greatly appreciated!

A few things:

-85 to -81dbm is a significant boost to signal. A (more than) doubling, actually, since every 3 dbm is 2x signal strength. Not exactly what should be expected (The omni is a 9dbm antenna, I think), but still not to bad.

If you are mounting on the same pole as your TV antenna, you need to make sure there is at least 12 inches between the top of your omni and your TV antenna. 3ft would be better. Two antennas near each other will interfere, even if they are different wavelengths.

If you have tall trees or hills between you and the tower, you can expect some signal loss.

And EVDO, like WiFi, seems to step down transmission speeds based on your signal strength. Around -80-85dbm seems to top out at about 650-700kb/s. When I got mine down to -75dbm (and lower), I started getting 'full' speeds at 1250kb/s. HOWEVER, better signal strength means fewer packets lost, and an overall better connection, so the antenna, even with just a 4dbm gain, is still very worth it.

jfulmer,

The antenna is more than 3 feet in vertical distance from the T.V. antenna. I do have many trees and hills between my home and the tower. Even w/ my signal strength I still pull 800-1050kb/s very often (DSL Reports Speed Test). I really want to try and install the antenna on the very top of the pole, to see if there is any signal increase!

Thanks again!
