From what I read there is not a router available for the 595U. What I would like to do is share an internet connection from my PC (computer with 595U hooked into it) with my laptop. I'm attempting to use using a small microsoft wireless usb adaptor as the transmitter to an inserted wireless card in the laptop. I can not get it to work. Has amyone else attempted to do this? Is it even possible?
Thanks

Alex,
For what I'm attempting to do that would be a very costly option. I just want to be able to share the internet connection from my PC to a laptop within our home. I was hoping someone could help with setting up a "ad hoc" connection, in other words ICS. I was able to do this when I had dial-up but for some reason I can't get it to work with the 595U.
Right now I obviously have the 595U plugged into my PC via USB port. I then connected my Microsoft broadband networking wireless usb adaptor (MN-510) into another USB port. In my mind this should serve as the transmitter to the wireless card plugged into the laptop. So in essence the 595U picks up the signal from the PCS antenna brings it into my PC where it is then fed to my browser and out to the MN-510 for the shared connection. When I went through the configuration setting I right clicked on the network connection icon/advance/ and then checked the box for shared connection. Then under "home networking connection" I selected the option that fed the signal to the "wireless network connection #10" which is the configuration that was build when I plugged in the MN-510.
I then went to the laptop and made the necessary connections there. I also tried the wizard with no luck. Anyway has anyone else attempted to do this with success? Sure would appreciate some assistance.
Thanks

| Is your laptop seeing the MN-510 in your wireless network? |

| Apparently from what I've read the MN-510 is a USB adapter. Meaning it is used to PICK UP a wireless signal from a wireless router. It has no way of broadcasting or transmitting a wireless signal. To have a wireless network you will need to add a wireless access point/ wireless router. |

BING! We have a winnar. You can do ad-hoc wireless networking, however. Not entirely sure you can do that and route to the ad-hoc interface, however. |

Sorry the device is a MN 510 not a MN10 and yes it can be used as a transmitter as well as a receiver. I have the two computers talking but for some reason I can't get the internet sharing to work. It may have something to do with the IP address. Sprint has a public IP that is not in range of those used in private networks. That's why I'm asking the question if anyone else has tried this and got it to work?
Thanks

Just to make sure I wasn't going insane, I looked up the product information. The MN 510 is a standard 802.11b/g WiFi USB adapter. It cannot act as a base station.
There are two types of WiFi networking.
Infrastructure. This is what most people think of when they do 802.11 wireless neworking. This requires a base station, and any number of wireless devices that all talk to the base station. All network traffic goes through the base station like a hub.
Ad-hoc. Simple point-to-point wireless network where two client adapters can talk directly to each other. As I said, I don't know if adhoc networking on Windows allows you to route the roaming laptop to the Internet.

To be honest, the simplest and easiest way to make this work is to buy a cheap 802.11g access point or wireless router (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=373&), and let it handle the wireless for you. You'll have to turn on Internet Connection Sharing on your PC and turn OFF DHCP on the wireless access point (ICS runs a DHCP server so the laptop can pull an IP address).
That would be my suggestion anyway. |

Well, now I'm confused and I'm getting a headache. You just said MN 510 again which is what I referred to . I looked up MN10 and that doesn't appear to exist. There is a MN 110 but it appears to be a USB connection to a wired network so . . . . . . I'm just not sure what you're asking. From what I read the MN 510 is a receiver without the ability to transmit a signal. Maybe I'm reading something wrong?
EDIT: jfulmer apparently types a lot faster than I do. He certainly has great knowledge of networking than I so I bow to him . . . . . . . thanks for confirming that I am not losing MY mind! |

jfulmer,
I'm trying to understand what you're telling me. Let me see if we're both on the same sheet of music. First, I'm using the 595U aircard as a broadband connection. It it my understanding there is no practical router solution for this card. That being said how does your suggestion get around this?
Right now my PC and laptop can see each other via the MN510 and the MN520 wireless notebook adaptor. This tells me there is a connection. However, the laptop can not access the internet through the PC. I have internet sharing "checked" in the configuration but for some reason and hence the reason for my inquiry it does not work. Perhaps I'm missing something in your reply?
Thanks

I don't know if a wireless set up is essential to you, but I was able to connect my two computers with ethernet cable and share my connection from my 595u to the 2nd computer.
If theres a connection between the two computers, you should be able to set up to share the internet though. You should see if your laptops TC IP and DNS Server settings on the adapter are set to match the PC, or at least thats what I had to do with my LAN connection in order to share the connection. |
