Hi
I am having a problem with 2 new U720 Sprint modems. I have tried both of them with the same results. After approx. 2 Days of running (Connected to the Sprint network) the usb modem locks up. I get a error from windows connection manager that the modem is disconnected or not responding. The only way to get it working again is to unplug it from the usb port and reconnect it. It then works fine for apporx. 2 days again? I have the newest connection manager installed. I have the newest firmware installed on both modems. I am running this on a brand new Dell system with Windows XP Pro SP2. I was using the connection manager software to connect originally but that software would crash within a day so I am no longer using it and starting the connection from the dial up connection created by the connection manager software. I have also tried several different usb ports on the computer but still have the same issue no matter which U720 modem I try using. This sytem is going to be used in a remote location with no users around to reset the modem so I need to resolve this issue any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Rob

Do a search for 'remote location' as there was a similar post months ago. I don't know if he resolved his problem or not. He may have restarted his computer every so often.
The following generic comments are made without knowledge of what processes you have followed to this date.
As a consultant I would note that researching the various computer makes and models to determine which would perform the best under the circumstances might be a better option than trying to use one for the lowest price option. Some computer makes and models are just not as reliable as others.
The two day problem may also be a Sprint issue if Sprint drops connections every two days, or whatever time period, and renews with a new address. If so, you might have no solution available. Spend a not so few bucks for a fixed address is an option to resolve the problem if it is not Dell or Microsoft related.
You can lock the card to EVDO only in case it is wandering off into the other option.
Also, the equipment should be thorougly tested at the remote site rather than assuming it will function as it does in your office.
Another intesting idea is to consider whether your malware protection software or software update might be doing a restart you are unaware of and you have not set the card to connect automatically on startup. Thus by the time you notice the problem the computer has restarted and you aren't aware of this and blame it on the card. |

I can verify that Sprint does NOT drop the connection every few days, as part of standard policy. I've been connected for at least a week at one time (If the power would stop going out at my house, it would be longer), and since EVDO uses a ppp connection, there's no concept of a 'refresh' for IP addresses.
Sprint also does not currently offer a static IP address.
If multiple USB modems are locking up, it is either a USB driver issue, or a hardware issue on the Dell. If Sprint's connection manager is crashing after a day or so, I would say that is a clue, since it really doesn't do anything except monitor the modem and send the occasional command do it.
If you can, I'd try the USB modems on a different machine and see if it makes a difference, if you haven't already, you may try doing a Windows Update on the Dell to make sure the USB drivers are at the most recent version. |
