I see the great speeds you are getting and was wondering if you did any tweaks to your system, external antenna and what specs are your computer?

I'm getting about half of what you are getting (I average 450k) and was wondering if you did anything special. I too have the V620.

My current setup is RWIN is 256960, MTU 1500 and max servers 10/20. I don't use Venturi or an external antenna. I'm beginning to think I live near a tower because my signal is usually 90-100%. I use TCPOptimizer that is available at dslreports.com to adjust these values

Driving around town (Dallas), I get can get much weaker signals but speed is good (400-600) compared to what I got in DC. I was getting just about twice dialup but that's bearable when the hotel charges 10 bucks a day for wi fi. Smile

I'll be in Newark at the end of the month and will be interested to see what I get there. I've heard good reports on the antenna but I haven't felt the need for one yet.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1000 I've had for about six months. Nothing special but I'm so impressed with it and Dell, I'm going to spring for a 700m within the next few months...4.1 pounds!

I think the following would be useful to know:

- PC card used
- location
- external booster antenna
- any other tweaks/mods

Especially, if you have having a performance problem, where are you located and post your specifics. I have heard that some sports that have had EVDO for some time, are getting worse performance, compared to areas that just got it. Perhaps, this is related to the number of concurrent users?

When I was checking EVDO out one of the things I read was that it's on a pure data channel that is not affected by the number of users. That was going to be one of the disadvantages of EVDV because it was going back on the voice channels and would be subject to traffic slowdowns.

Michael, since you use the antenna, I'm assuming the signal in Chicago isn't very strong. Could you give us the specs for your area? Are any spots better than others? It would be interesting for everyone to do the same.

I'm off today so I think I'll just drive all around Dallas to check signal strength downtown, Plano, Addison, south Dallas and Garland etc. I haven't been in a non-EVDO 1x area so I'll try that too.

BTW, I got my first full bill today, 714 megs usage! No additional charges and they didn't bitch at me. I had read some data usage horror stories on some other forums about evdo on phones and I wondered if there was going to be a "catch" about my heavy usage but not a whimper. Smile

Hey Richard,
If you find yourself in the Richardson area, look me up. Maybe we can meet up and compare notes and speeds using different cards at the same location. Would be an interesting comparison.

Didn't see you on the user list to send a private message. I sent Micheal my phone number if you want to call.

Scott

That might be fun, we could have a parking lot "shoot out" between the V620 and the PC5220 for bragging rights. Smile I signed up so send me a PM and we'll try to work it out.

Well, I have to say, service is pretty good in Dallas. From near downtown to the 'burbs was always in the 500-600 range with just one test at 378 but a repeat on the same street saw 550. I just can't get over having broadband at my fingertips no matter where I am.

I didn't hear back from Scott so I guess he wasn't up for the "showdown", probably afraid to face the mighty V620. Laughing

I can see it now.

Some old western music going in the background.

You are looking at each other, and snarl. One of you spits, the other spits. You both take 10 paces walking away from each other and then quickly insert your cards in your laptops....

Very Happy

...clink...clink...clink, the sound of my spurs as I approach the dastardly Scott, V620 in hand, a bead of sweat rolls down my face, suddenly Scott makes his move, smoothly I slam the V620 into it's well worn PC slot and dial #777, I can see Scott trembling as he attempts to put the PC5220 in it's place but a bad case of nerves causes him to miss the card's holster even as I'm firing up the Java applet at dslreports.

Finally, he jams the poor 5220 home and fumbles for his keyboard but I'm already geting my results, yep, it's all over, dust settles on Scott's screen as I turn, eyes squinted against the Texas sun, looking for the next hombre who would dare challenge the mighty V620!
