Michael, what about the company that you said might have a usb evdo modem out by Christmas?
Is that still possible? any update from them?
Please let us know.

Hey Dagemsmaker,
You better check out the throughput speeds on UMTS before making that big switch and paying ETF's. From what I've been hearing, the initial UMTS devices are barely providing throughput equivalent to current EVDO. I have no way of substantiating this, but would definitely do a "try before you buy".
One other thing to consider is that EVDO is deployed on dedicated 1.25mhz channels. Voice traffic on the network has no effect on throughput. UMTS requires a full 5mhz of bandwidth for equivalent throughput. UMTS speed will definitely improve over time, but by then, Verizon and Sprint will likely have their EVDO Rev A networks deployed.
Good Luck. |

I have heard they were on track and development was moving rapidly forward.
I am not the company creating this, they may decide not to "keep me in the loop". They may have me sign a NDA (they haven't yet) and I may not be able to talk about it.
So, I have nothing else to report and don't when, how much, etc.
As soon, as I know more, I will post it to this thread. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Has anyone *any* updates re: *any* company's progress (or lack thereof) regarding usb modems for evdo or edge/umts/hsdpa networks? re: this "mystery" company to which Michael refers, Falcom, Franklin or anyone else?
Also, what's the latest update re: EVDO Rev A? is that going to become a reality in 2006 and what's the latest ETA?

That request was for anyone to reply, not just Michael.
Re: you, Michael, vagueness would be appreciated. Could you at least tell us will this be a usb "dongle" type modem that will conveniently and not too unattractively/too awkwardly plug into an oQo usb port? and is it going to work on evdo networks or umts/hsdpa networks?

I went back and re-read the post where Michael said it was an evdo company.
Well, I think I can put the pieces together now.
It's Sprint.
Michael didn't tell me. I just connected two dots. I already had one of the dots.
Doesn't surprise me. Verizon is so damn greedy about everything. No doubt they're afraid they'll lose a dime or three in their DSL business if they made BroadBandAccess *too* convenient and attractive and mobile for their customers. Of course, they're going to lose MY $110 per month I pay them for various data plans on various devices if Sprint comes out with a carrier approved usb modem ONE friggin' DAY before Verizon does. I pay ETFs in a heartbeat. I just don't CARE...
Yes, that's a threat verizon. Now multiply it by at least 100,000 people out there that are going to do the EXACT SAME THING... |

- Type of device:
Laptops
- What OS (Mac / Win / Linux / Windows CE)?
100% MacOS (All Tiger flavored at this time)
- quantity you would want
~20 12" PowerBooks
- what price would you pay for a USB EVDO modem device? (price range OK)
No more than a PC card.
- If a USB EVDO modem were available, would you rather get it vs. a data card?
Absolutely -- and an integrated external antenna sure would be nice.
PCMCIA cards are antiquated. |

I have a rather standard laptop...with PCMCIA slot and currently a Kyocera KPC650.
I've done a bit of reading regarding the amount of power a device like that is putting out, and I don't like what I'm seeing. I *damned* well don't like the fact that all this power is sitting right smack on top of my TESTICLES.
I'd like to have kids one day...and I'd prefer they not look like extras from the Moss Eisley bar scene. And avoiding testicular cancer would be a nice plus.
There's only two ways to fix this:
1) USB EVDO device and the longest workable USB cable I can find, possibly two such and a powered hub in the middle.
2) Use the Kyocera KR1 or D-Link or whatever to move the card physically away from me and then run the much lower-powered WiFi to my laptop. Note that I am NOT interested in sharing my signal and would put beefy security on the router.
The USB EVDO device would be cheaper. But I've got another problem: in the quest for max cheapness, Verizon is switching over to devices like the new Audiovox card that don't have external antenna jacks. I live in an RV. I move around a lot. I need serious antenna/boost gear.
It appears that the morons at Verizon are going to put up as many barriers to the KR1 and similar as possible because they don't want people sharing the signal.
But being too stupid to support USB devices, they are quite literally acting as "ball busters".
This is SERIOUSLY pissing me off. Pardon the pun. |

Just left the Verizon store looking into EVDO.
I'm so frustrated with Verizon it's not funny... I've been with the same cellular service for so many years I can't remember all of their names... Centel, Sprint, 360, Verizon and at least one or two before Centel...
I'm on my 3rd or 4th 2 year contract since Verizon took over.
One one hand, they've never screwed up my bill, the service has been exemplory and the folks at the Verizon retail stores have always been very helpful.
On the other Verizon has gotten in the habit of severely crippling technology that they fear might reduce their profits.
For instance, the last phone I bought from them was a Motorola V710... I got it for the Bluetooth support, replacing my perfectly good LG VX-6000.
Except that they crippled the Bluetooth. It only supports handsfree and DUN profiles. No file transfers.
They removed the ability to transfer certain items from the option transflash memory card because they want me to pay them a monthly fee or per item through "Get It Now" (I think "It" means "Screwed").
Etc. etc. etc. I was able to uncripple most things via seam edits and got a usable phone again.
Now have I have a need for EVDO. It seems that Verizon has again crippled their phones. None of their EVDO phones will work as modems any more whether tethered or via Bluetooth!
The only one that works is a PocketPC for $300 + 2 year contract and it's less capable than my iPaq.
I too am one of those people who has a new notebook that doesn't have a PCMCIA slot, much less one that supports cardbus. So their only remaining EVDO card is useless to me as well.
Looking at the link for the USB to cardbus adaptor for EVDO modems, they don't list the Verizon 5720 or whatever it is as being supported and that's the only Verizon seems to offer now.
If Sprint DOES come out with a USB EVDO modem that has OS X Tiger support, I WILL open an account with them and just may move both my cellular accounts over there too as soon as this contract runs out.
My son just bought a Blade... seems Sprint didn't cripple anything on it, all BT profiles are enabled, etc. and as a modem, he's consistantly getting 1.5Mbps throughput here in Las Vegas.
I don't need EVDO as a replacement for my high speed cable modem here at home, nor my T1 at the office. Those two places are where I do 99% of my internet access. I need it when I'm away from home and office and need to remotely deal with our servers at work. That's the ONLY way I'm allowed to leave the area is if I can be reached by phone and can remotely fix software problems.
Try running Remote Administrator or VNC over the equivilent of a 14.4 or 28.8 modem connection (Verizon's National Access) and you'll know why I need a USB EVDO modem.
I'd much rather just have an EVDO DUN enabled phone that'll connect to my notebook via Bluetooh and save the extra $60+ a month but I'll take whatever I can get. |

I am replying to your post on a different thread here (to keep the other thread on topic).
We will have to wait until these devices ship to see if there are Mac OS X drivers before we know if they will work. I do not know if they will or will not have Mac drivers. I have contacted the company to try to find out and/or get an eval unit.
I am aware of one company working on a EVDO USB Modem (not Sprint as previously guessed), and this would be the perfect solution for PowerBook 12/iBook/PCs with PC Slot, and I have known about this for some time, BUT we all know how ship dates slip (e.g. KR1). I was told end of 2005, and we only have 2 weeks left.
I hope to be able to say more about this next month. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

It is very easy to use any Sprint Bluetooth phone as modem on Mac. Unfortunately you're not going to get EVDO speeds and will max out in the effective 200-300Kbits/sec range of BT, maybe less. You could easily try it with your son's Blade.
Sprint officially supports tethering on any 1xRTT and EVDO phone whether USB or Bluetooth. While you can do it on Verizon, you might get a big bill (Michael can validate).
Update: According to this, if I understand correctly, any Sprint CDMA USB phone can be a modem on MAC without needing drivers. Try it with your son's Blade phone.

Thanks for the replies... and I'm sorry my first post was so negative. I was just so frustrated just getting back from the Verizon store. I halfway expected/expect the next time I go in, that I'll find out that Verizon has had the keypad removed from all new phones and they only call Verizon Directory Assistance to dial it for you at 25 cents per call or unlimited for $4.99 a month.
EVDO isn't an emergency for me. But I do get impatient some times. If it was THAT important that I had it now, I'd simply buy a 15" powerbook and the card that works, or go find a cheap pre-Compaq buyout HP notebook on eBay. |
