USB EVDO Modem

If you are "OK" with carrying around something extra for your PowerBook 12" or iBook, seems like the upcoming Kyocera KR1 router will do the trick. I am playing with a pre-production model AND have tested it with a iBook and PowerBook 12 and it works flawlessly.

The potential solution for Mac users with no PC Card slot is possibly the new PPC-6700 phone. It supposedly allows DUN (dial up networking) either through Bluetooth or USB from a computer. Sprint does allow DUN on the Treo so may on this phone. Even if Sprint officially does not, there will likely be 3rd party apps that will enable it.

And apparently only $15-$30/month for unlimited service on PDA phones.

The downside is you can't talk on your phone while using DUN. As cheap as Sprint is, I suppose you could have two phones.

Here is one cool thing you can also do with a PPC-6700 phone, use it as a very expensive Sprint EVDO locator. Nobody makes a EVDO Finder, like they do for your keychain for finding WiFi, and since the EVDO coverage maps for the carriers are never really current.....

Hi everyone... I would love to use a USB EVDO right now... I am using the new Dell X1 ultra light notebooks and I only have the option of CF card and USB... and I need to use WWAN... anyone has any ideas how can I do that?

Hello Everyone, My company builds vehicle computer system and almost all of our customers buy a verizon air card for broadband in their vehicle. While all of our system have a pcmcia slot it would be a lot easier to deal with a usb modem.

If someone from verizon is reading this thread approving usb modems would be a wize choice. My company would purchase many of them on a montly basis.

I agree that a USB EVDO Modem is long overdue AND when available (they will be), MANY MANY will select it over a PCMCIA Card.

I know of at least one major EVDO Manufacturer who is working very hard at getting one out the door AND available in the US for purchase and use.

Yep, I'm in exactly the same situation. I live in a semi-rural area and am just beyond DSL range. Local phone company is unlikely to expend the capital anytime soon to get fiber-optic to us. No cable was ever run in the neighborhood, and with all the Sat-dishes up, no cable company is going to bother now. I was the only one in the neighborhood with ISDN (I got lucky because the phone company had an extended range ISDN card availalble at their switch) but the per-minute charges ratcheted up massively as my kids got older.

Was starting to look into point-to-point wireless connection, but would have needed to share it with at least 3 neighbors to make it financially viable. Decided I really didn't want to be an ISP if I could avoid it.

As soon as I found out EVDO was available, I signed up. Cut my costs by at least half. I'm using a PCI-PCMCIA adapter in my server and a cheap Radio Shack window mount antenna (server is in a bad location in the house for reception). But if a USB version was available, I would have bought that (might have been able to avoid an external antenna on top of not needing the PCI-PCMCIA card). Will eventually go the router route (sorry about that) when they become avaialble at a reasonable price. Already set my next door neighbor up with EVDO as well. Others will likely follow.

It better have an antenna port.

The recent trend away from same is idiocy. Verizon retail stores are discontinuing everything but that damned 5470 abortion POS and I hope it hurts them badly. There's some things you don't cut corners on. And if they're visibly willing to cut their product line to "garbage only" on the EVDO cards, I have to wonder if they're doing it on cellphones too.

I currently hate my Sprint cellphone service and may switch soon, but I won't be walking into a Verizon brand store again under any circumstances.

I have a Sony U70 Handtop and I have been frustratged to say the least in trying to get any sort of answer regarding CF Cards.

I would jump at a USB connection. I would love for it to be as fast as the PC card if not faster, but really, all I want is an option.

Still no USB device. I guess I am going back to EDGE. Sad

Falcom Samba USB 56 and/or 75 from hetrogenous.com and using a FlexUSB extension to make it flat on the back of my device rather than sticking out of the side. That way it is out of the way. You have to take the plastic off the Flexusb device for it to work, which is even better because it makes it very flush and less noticable. The plastic comes off pretty easily with your finger nails and some pressure.

Seems like there is no alternative. I heard Falcom stopped producing their Falcom USB evdo device and there hasn't been a hint of anybody else moving forward with a device.

Maybe Cingular with their UMTS with HSDPA that can do VOICE and DATA at the same time may decide to produce a device.
