I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this and if it will work on a Mac? This adaptor seems to be a solution to the "no pci slot" problem. On the site they list both Sprint and Verizon cards that work on Macs but I don't
know if other drivers are needed.

That's the first I've seen it on a US site but this thread shows the same adapter several times on an aussie site. That is one expensive adapter and still on backorder but a great find none the less. Several people are looking for something and this appears to be the first one available in the US if it really is available, i.e backordered. |

We are hearing that the USB EVDO Modem will:
"be more elongated and more stick like"
So, the pictures that we posted may not be completely accurate. More info as we get it. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I would much prefer a built in EVDO card, or one that could be inserted like the Apple wifi card. Probably user installable would be best then we could choose our vendor and not be stuck with the one that gave the best deal to the laptop maker. Odds are that the pc cards are exactly the same internally with the vendors software making up the difference.
Several PC Laptops have built in EVDO but it is Verizon and I prefer Sprint, rightly or wrongly.
The PCcard is a real pain: insert, put away, take out, etc. I really hate wires and things that stick out. The fewer the external wires, gadgets and such, the happier I am.
Given the choice of a router or a relatively inexpensive internal card, I'd choose the card. |

I would prefer a USB EVDO card to a PC or ExpressCard Evdo card. I have been a Verizon customer forever but I would pay the cancellatioin fee on my Verizon EVDO contract and move to sprint if they came out with a Mac compatable USB EVDO solution. I have told this to the tech support people at Verizon. I would do it in a heartbeat.I have and iMac, a G4 Powerbook, a MacBook, and the only reason I do not have a MacBook Pro to replace the Powerbook is that there is no ExpressCard available. I would prefer the USB solution as it would allow me to gain internet access with one card on any of these machines. Further, If I were to put the Verizon AccesManager software on a flash drive I could install EVDO any any desktop or other computer that does not have a PC/ExpressCard slot.
I would pay up to the summed cost of a PC card and an ExpressCard as it would replace them both while giving greater versatility. |

I think a EVDO USB Modem when available will be a huge hit.
I also know the ExpressCard will be huge too.
Your post should be a wake up call for the carriers - customers want specific products and they will switch in a heartbeat "to the carrier" that does listen to their needs. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| The availability of USB modems would make EVDO much more attractive and increase its subscriber base more than anything else, with the possible exception of lowering the cost. To many of us, however, ease of use and reliability are the more critical issue. Personally, I would rather spend up to $1,000 for a reliable USB modem and $80 a month than a few hundred dollars and $20 a month for the service. I hate PC cards and refuse to use them (having done so in the past), which leaves embedded EVDO as my only alternative. That means only a select few laptop models to choose from and the prospect of having to replace the entire computer every year or so, which is much more costly than replacing even an expensive USB modem. It would also be a dream come true to easily use the modem on different computers, a lifesaver if one computer becomes inoperable. I would buy at least three USB modems, two with active accounts and a third as a backup, in case one went down. |

YES YES YES EVDO USB MODEMS OR ANY OTHER SOLUTION WOULD BE GREAT FOR THE MILLIONS AROUND THE WORLD WHO OWN OR ARE ABOUT TO OWN THE GREAT NEW MACBOOKS (NOT MACBOOK PROS) AND WANT TO USE VERIZONS BROADBAND SERVICE (OR SPRINTS), ETC.
IT APPEARS THAT THE NEW EXPRESS PC CARDS WILL WORK WITH THE MACBOOK PROS- BUT SINCE THE MACBOOKS HAVE NO PC SLOT
WHAT ARE WE TO DO>>>??? SO YES YES PLEASE SUPPORT EVDO FOR NON PC CARD SLOT EQUIPED MAC OSX MACHINES PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE |

| There are phones that can be used as modem and use the USB port which would satisfy all of these requests for a USB modem. It appears that a phone and the PAM monthly fee may be less than a PC Card and plan. |

|

Hi, everybody, be careful what you ask for as you might get it. What am I talking about here? Well, go back a ways on this thread and you'll see that I've been screaming for a usb evdo modem for a long time.
Well, about two months ago, I got one from a leading usb evdo modem company. It's one of the companies that I've written about here in this thread. I kept in such close and constant contact with the President that he decided to include me in a small (as in a handful) group of beta testers.
They FedExed a Sprint-enabled usb evdo modem card.
What a disappointment for ME (maybe not for you, however, as you'll read below).
See, I want a usb evdo modem for a handtop type of computer, ala an oQo.com or Sony UX180P type of computer. You know, those approximately 1 pound beauties that actually run Windows XP in the palm of your hand AND are pocketable to boot!
Well, it never dawned on me how LARGE these usb evdo modems are relatively to a small 1 pound computing device. They're HUGE compared to these devices, about half or 1/3 of the size and they largely stick out!
To put this into visual perspective, think of having a PCMCIA card on a regular sized laptop computer that was about 1/3 the size of the laptop computer AND it stuck mostly out!
Talk about ugly, awkard, UNacceptable and all of the other adjectives one can throw in here.
Now I'm waiting for the major carriers to either a) come up with a compact flash card with evdo built into it; b) Chicago to implement its citywide WiMax plan; and/or c) have embedded wireless conectivity built in to the handtop like Sony's UX180P (although unfortunately that's only at painfully slow EDGE speeds in this first model). |

I would be more than pleased if you mentioned my name to that president and suggested I become a beta tester: 3rd Decade of Mac consulting and database design and own a new MacBook Pro so I can run mac and windows. |

My nuts are still mutating along. At this rate my firstborn will have 3/4ths of a brain, half a kidney, three dicks and two vaginas. Not good.
Dagemsmaker: ever seen "Grease"? All you gotta do is wear a T-shirt and wrap the USB modem thingie in your sleeve like a pack o' smokes, run a 6ft USB extension cable down to your mini-critter, set and done .
At least the dang thing will be somewhere other than your "happy sack". |

I'd like a usb evdo modem. i have a sprint coonection card that I got through this site. if a usb modem came out could i just switch to it with sprint or would i need to cancel my account and re up? I bought a Sony UX 180 and i'd like to be able to switch it out to use with my laptop and desktop. When is this thing gonna happen? About cost, I don't see why it should be more than an evdo pc card because they will sell well. But I'd pay up to $500. _________________ SonyTX17P&UX90S

There seems to be a lot of momentum growing about a USB EVDO modem (from multiple manufacturers - not just the one big fish mentioned before, maybe even 2 big manufacturers).
It makes so much sense. If I was back in Las Vegas placing a bet, I would also bet on Sprint coming out with this first, but that is just a hunch. Time will tell. |
What is the problem to get something like this here on Sprint? Having a usb device itself is the best solution (like the Korean one above), but we can't even get a PC card to usb adapter that works with sprint? Apparently the adapter from elan doesn't work with the Sprint connection software? This is crazy. I bought my Sony UX 180 last week and have sprint evdo service via a PC card that I can't use with it! Anything new happening? _________________ SonyTX17P&UX90S |
