|

Well I tested my friends laptop with a Kyocera KPC650 PMCMIA card. He also had a small plug-in antenna with about a 4' cable. I fired her up and immediately recieved a signal. As I moved around the house it improved slightly, but when I went outside it improved more. I maxed out at 4 bars and was very excited until I realized what I was receiving. It was locked on to Extended Network!! I did some testing with some pages that take awhile to load such as NASCAR.com and saw a bit of improvement from my dialup. Then I tried to download a file and it leveled off at 17 kbps about 3 times my normal dial-up. This is about what is advertised for Extended 2-4 times dialup speed. I went up on my porch roof in search of something besides Extended and plugged the antenna in, but was never able to hit anything. I suppose it's possible the tower I receive my cell phone signal from is only setup for Extended, not Broadband yet?? If I could have at least found a hint of Broadband signal I would think it was possible to amplify to a usable signal, but not sure there is any. According to the Verizon map that is the case, but hoping differently.
My next step would be to test out Sprint. Don't know anyone with a Sprint card I could try, so going to have to take the plunge and purchase! According to their map I am closer to "fringe" than Verizon and maybe they have Broadband on their tower!!
That's my experiment so far!! |

You can check for broadband coverage on their site ya know. (Sprint or verizon) Not just normal cell signal. It's just a different search option. If you already did, sorry. |

Sorry used the wrong term, instead of Extended Network I should have said I could only connect through their National Access network. They advertise this as being 2-3 times faster than dialup and that's about what I was getting!
So I guess my REVISED question would be is it possible the tower I utilized for connecting to the internet thru Verizon only National Access and not Broadband capable?? Hopefully that makes more sense!! |

Yep already have and on both I'm just out of their broadband area, Sprint is closer. But I know and have read numerous people here with boosters, antennas, etc pulling in a good signal even if they are fringe.
In the first post I said I had borrowed a laptop with a Verizon card, but only had received a slower connection. So I'm wondering if the tower is only setup for National Access instead of Broadband?? |
