I am a road warrior and have used data services from Sprint and Verizon for over 4 years. Recently I signed up for an Alltel account because of their coverage in Nevada. I think people should hear about this experience.
Because I have little credit history, I had to pay a $328 deposit. I paid that and the data card would not activate in Ely. According to Alltel, it was a network problem. I was given a case number (ALWAYS get one of those!) and was told I could expect a call from tech support. I waited 3 days and heard nothing. It was a very good thing that I didn't cancel my Verizon account because I still could not activate the card. I called back and was put on hold for over 2 hours so when I finally connected with customer support I canceled the account. I paid the deposit with a credit card and thought they should refund through the credit card but they insisted on sending me a check and assured me I would receive it within 30 days.
When I left Ely, Nevada, I went through another supposed Alltel data coverage area in Eureka. Guess what. All I could get there was an analog signal.
On 7/13 (lucky Friday!) I called and after another very lengthy time on hold was told the check had been sent. I called again today (lucky Friday the 27th) because I had not received the check that "had been sent". After yet another lengthy time on hold I was told that the check "WILL be sent" and I should receive it early next week.
Seriously folks, I would rather deal with used car salespeople than cell phone companies but Alltel takes the cake.
Last but not least, I did finally get a call about the open case number. It came on July 6th, THREE WEEKS after I had the initial problem and was given the case number.

Yeah. I don't think you have to look very hard to find similar horror stories about any and all of the carriers. It's an industry that simply doesn't appear to give a wit about their customers and/or customer service. Absolutely amazing but I think they get to continue to do so because we just aren't going to walk away from them all now are we? I know I can't do without my wireless phone and data card now. It's pretty much like the gasoline prices. We just bend over and take it . . . . .
