You have a DIR-450 and updated to firmware 1.02. You have a USB interface U720, not a PCMCIA S720 card, plugged the U720 into the USB port on the back of the DIR-450, the DLink setup page had a U720 as one of the selection options (again, not an S720), you selected U720 from the setup page and the router is now working with your U720?
Sorry to be so pedantic, but just want to make sure. If you are indeed using a U720 with the DIR-450, then you are the first to report success. I'll be thrilled if this is true. |
U720.
USB.
Plugged it into the router.
Picked "Sprint Novatel U720" from the drop down list.
Ignored the next page where it asks for the username and password and just hit enter.
Clicked the "Connect" button.
Browsed to this site.
Typed my response above. |

Excellent. Thanks for confirming. I'll have to give it a try myself this weekend. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

And, by the way, the actual list of supported cards in the router's drop down list is not the same as the one printed in the manual. I was planning to use a Verizon PC5220 card, which is listed in the manual. But that card is not a choice in my router. Fortunately, I had a Sprint U720 USB card handy and it worked just fine.
I looked through the list of Verizon cards in my router and there is not one single model listed that is currently available to buy at Verizonwireless.com.
Looks like D-Link really needs to come out with a new firmware. |

Definitely agree wrt to D-Link and new firmware. Also wouldn't hurt if they documented their firmware changes better. I checked the 1.02 firmware revision info when it first came out and noted no info about the U720. When the FAQ information regarding which EVDO modems the DIR-450 supports was updated, again, no mention of the U720. The first hint from D-Link that the DIR-450 might support it was when the main page was updated (sometime after the 1.02 firmware release and FAQ update) and started listing the U720 as compatible.
I'll definitely be firing up my DIR-450 again this weekend. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

A little bit more info about the DIR-450 and the U720 for those interested:
Just as Kreggo reported, the U720 is indeed supported now by the DIR-450 and does work. However, after a few speeds tests, it appears that the DIR-450 has the same performance issue with the U720 as the KR1 used to have (see http://www.evdoforums.com/thread3918.html). Download is limited to about 500 kb/sec and upload around 200-300 kb/sec. Since Kyocera only recently released new firmware to fix this in the KR1, I imagine D-Link might get the same fix implemented in their next DIR-450 firmware.
Other than that, the U720 seems to be working fine in the DIR-450. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

Unfortunately, I was testing at my office in downtown Houston where my normal EVDO RevA speeds seldom get above 400K down and about 150K up. I just didn't get much of a chance to try it anywhere else and now it's out of my hands and on to another location for some extended field tests.
That's another way of saying the boss took it home to play with
I may just order the Kyocera to play with and see how they compare.
Also looking at the Zyxel ZyWall-2WG. Tons of interesting features on that one.
When I get the D-Link back, I'll do some speed testing and post the results here. |

Looks like I was wrong about the above. I have been noticing increased performance lately with my DIR-450 and U720, so I did another speed test this morning. I was getting 1100kb/sec down and ~300kb/sec up. So looks like the DIR-450 is not limiting download as this was pretty much what I was getting before. There must have been a fair bit of congestion previously when I tested. Not sure about upload limit: need a bit more time for that. The DIR-450 may or may not have the same upload limit as the KR-1 had with older firmware.
Also looks like Sprint may have rerouted the Southern California HA again. I'm getting better pings and the trace route looks quite different. It's possible that it might not be going up to Stockton/San Jose anymore. I'll try to look into it a bit more when I get a chance. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |
