For those playing with your new PPC-6800 Mogul, you may have discovered that GPS is NOT a feature of the PPC-6800.

However, have you heard about the firmware upgrade (available in a few months), that will add EVDO Rev A capability? There will be one other cool surprise with this firmware upgrade...

Internal GPS will be enabled.

That will allow GoogleMaps, GPS Directions and Sprint Locator Service to all work.

I cannot wait!

I am totally thrilled with both of those upgrades and that's exactly why I was totally willing to overlook it's few shortcomings for now. Also for those who need it there is a ROM update available now which adds Sprint Music Store functionality.

Cool! Is this GPS news actually confirmed by someone you know at Sprint? I had seen rumors that the 6800 had an internal GPS that was just turned off, didn't know if it was true.

This along with Rev. A will really transform the phone into the 'next gen' category. Can't wait to upgrade mine...

It is confirmed.

I agree that GPS & Rev A will make this the killer device.

Michael,

Will this be a-GPS which will require the sprint network at all times, or will it be full standalone mode?

Does Sprint expect Telenav to have a new version available that will work with WM 6.0 by the time the firmware upgrade is availabel?

I've had my 6800 for 20 days now. I'm deciding whether or not to keep it. The advertisements for the unit showed GPS. Other forums (including HTC's) state that the Mogul is unlikely to have the A-GPS working as an internal unit.

So, how to you know this will really happen?

Let's see . . . . . Michael = Owner of 3GStore.com = Sprint Master Agent = Just might know a Sprint insider or two . . . . . . . . I'd give him the benefit of the doubt myself. Wink

I'd like to believe the GPS will be activated. However, Sprint has a less than stellar track record. Remember the PPC-6600? Sprint said there would be a uprgrade to EVDO. I understand that it never happened.

I also understand that the HTC Kaiser and Verizon XV6800 will debut soon. I know the Kaiser will have an Internal GPS that works. It will also have more RAM than the Mogul (Verizon's modlel is supposed to have more RAM also).

Since Sprint Advertized this feature, they owe it to us to be absolutely definitive. If they won't, I may ditch the Mogul and go with the Kaiser.

Don't get me wrong. I like the Mogul and Sprint's EVDO a bunch. But the GPS is important.

As far as the PPC-6600 situation I think it was more of an implied promise as many Sprint employees, reps, the media, and others recycled the same wishful rumor of EVDO being activated with a software upgrade. I don't think Sprint ever went on record officially to state that they would offer the upgrade. Now it is a little different. Sprint is promising upgrades through an official channel so that should reinforce their commitment to an upgrade.

I hate to be right in this case. Sprint has removed the GPS sales point from their online advertisement. What does this mean. I think it's a harbinger of things not to come. I hate Verizon, but I'll bet their xv6800 comes out with the GPS and the Sprint model won't offer it.

If I'm wrong, prove it.

I did some googling and it looks like the 6800 can only do aGPS, not full GPS. So it can do location-based services like Telenav but you would not be able to run full GPS apps like TomTom, etc w/out using a separate GPS receiver.

The cell companies probably would not release many phones with full GPS available to 3rd part apps, as it would compete with their aGPS/LBS services.

Even if they don't activate the internal GPS, the Mogul's a great phone. I just bought another for my wife.

Which is the best external GPS device. I see a lot of people like the TomTom. Which works best with Google maps?

I love this phone, but feel like I got duped. It was originally avertised as a GPS phone that would run Telenav. I suspect that it was originally supposed to come out with WM 5 and then later upgrade to WM6. Telenav won't currently run on WM6. On top of the misleading info on the GPS, they sucked all of us loyal Sprint customers into buying one right out of the chute for full price then offered a $100 rebate 15 days later.

Michael, any word on when the GPS upgrade will be available?
