Posted: Thu Aug 18, 2005 5:26 pm Post subject: EVDO Laptop Success / Failure Postings - READ ME |
|
|
Some laptops have problems with specific EVDO cards and some laptops have NO Problems with EVDO Cards. We started a list of laptop issues over at:
Sierra Wireless PC5220 / AC580 Compatibility Issues
However, that is only as list of problems, lets also start a list that DOESN'T have any problems.
Here are the guidelines.
In the subject include the computer manuf, model and EVDO card used and if there is a problem or everything is OK.
The subject would be:
[OK/FAILED: Manuf Model OS and Card Name, Sprint/Verizon]
I will create a post shortly that says:
OK: Sony Vaio VGN-S460 XP & Novatel V620 Verizon
The subject says it all, if you happen to have the same model and are using a different card, start a new topic. This will make it very easy for people to search here, make it easier to find things in search engines AND for those wondering if their laptop will work, they can get some comfort in knowing someone else has it working.
If you come to a thread, with your exact same configuration, you can drop a quick reply that says, "Yep, works for me too".
Any comments/ideas to make this better, please post them here.
As an added bonus to get people to share their success or failure (and to build the ultimate resource), we will give one $25 Verizon Gift Card (you can use to pay your monthly bill) each month for the next 3 months. I know that $25 isn't a lot, but, you can help by taking a minute and your post can in turn help many others who are going down the EVDO road. This is open to anyone, just register and post. Each posting will count as one vote, we will randomly select one post each month. This is open to all, you just need to register on EVDOforums and post your success/failure. We will notify the winners on this forum and via email (all you will need to do, is give a mailing address, and we will mail you the gift certificate).
As I have time, I will start posting success/failures from clients who purchase from us too. Hopefully, we will have a fairly comprehensive list soon. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

We have our first winner!
Congratulations to.......
digimania
digimania was randomly selected from all the posts in the Success or Failure forum, and won a $25 Verizon Gift Card (which can be used against monthly Verizon Bill).
KEEP the posts coming, we are giving away 2 more Gift Cards for the following 2 months (and may continue if people keep posting). The more posts you have, the more entries you have for that month.
Keep in mind, your post probably will be helping others, so, if you find EVDOforums useful and maybe it has helped you, here is your chance to help someone in return.
Thanks again to all that posted - keep them coming. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

May I recommend that people post the make/model of their PCMCIA controller as reported by Windows device manager or equivelent?
If you're not familiar: open the control panel, go to "System", under the "hardware" tab open "device manager" and then hit the "+" next to "PCMCIA Adapters". Linux users should have some other way to report the chipset or worst case read the manual (on the laptop, or call the laptop vendor).
Mine reads: "Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 Cardbus Controller".
If you're reporting a "works for me too" and the original poster didn't list chipset, feel free to add that data.
If you have a laptop that's not named in this forum but you can find somebody having a good time with your PCMCIA chipset (on the motherboard) it's a good sign it'll play nice on your setup.
I think TI and Intel are the two biggest PCMCIA chipset vendors but they vary over time and there's probably others.
(This can probably be ignored on Macs.)

I suggest a table be made listing the laptop models in alphabetical order and posted. If these threads continue to grow it will be frustrating to read through until you find your particular laptop compatable or not. _________________ Sony T250 1.2 Ghz & 17" Powerbook 1.5 Ghz |

|

I just got a new Fujitsu N6410 17" laptop. The 5220 card works fine in it. In fact it works better than it did in my old Sony VAIO laptop. I averaged speeds in the 900 to 1.1 mbps down/125 kbps up on the VAIO. Out of the box the new laptop was getting about 800 kbps average d/125 up. After a bit of tweaking via the Broadband Reports site I am now consistantly averaging 1.2 mbps down/155 kbps up on the Fujitsu laptop. I am using the MCM ver 2.5 and VzAccess 5.1.0 without the firmware upgrades (so I can still force EVDO only).
No problem issues with the evdo nor with the embedded 802.11b/g wireless LAN.

I just received my card today... and the installation, activation and connection were flawless. I didn't even have time to hold my breath as I waited to see what conflicts would arise.
I logged on to read the forum before doing anything and was glad to just plug in the card and have OSX recognize it instead of using the Verizon install CD.
It was such a beautiful experience. I want to thank the admins and everyone who has participated in this. |

I know everyone hates this card, but it's been working for me the last 6 or so months ... activated it on a P2 lappy, popped it in my G3 and set it up with "Sprint PCS Vision" modem driver. At the time, running OS X 10.2! Not in EVDO area, but it still beats regular dial-up! _________________ Kriminal Minded |

I have a HP Pavillion DV5040US running Windows XP SP2 w/media center Latptop. AMD 2GHz 2.00GB of ram with Texas Instuments PCIxx21 Cardbuss Controller. I had some real bad problems with my new Pantech PX500 on the Sprint network. It would seem after being online for a little while my laptop would crash. Bluescreen, dumpping memory all the good stuff.
I did however find the fix. I found it on the HP website. Just by accident I downloaded the bios update at that point i was willing to try anything. To my suprise it worked! I'm not real sure but, I think it had somthing to do with the power consumption output of my card slot.
Inconclusion if you have a HP DV model and are having this type of issue download the bios update at the HP website and it should correct this problem.
I hope that this helps some one else out, it sure helpped me.
Good luck
