LOL...Yep you got me on that, I figured it was some kind of technical antenna related acronym of some sort! |

Well I took a lap top home from work and crawled up on the roof after getting home tonight.
I'm surprised in the swings that the signal takes even while standing in one spot on my roof. I would get signals ranging from -75db all the way up to -105db. With the signal averaging about -90db. Did 3 speed tests on the roof and the signal dropped as I did each test...speeds were about 400-500 down and 60-200 up.
Does a broad swing in signal strength give any indication as to which type of antenna would work better...omni vs directional. |

I was looking the mb6000 router you had suggested and saw that it mentions that it's easily upgradable to REV A. Would you be able to tell me whats involved with the REV A upgrade process on this router? I take it that the Linksys router (WRT54G3G-ST) is REV A compatible? Other than the Linksys router being a few bucks more, when it comes to these two routers, would there be a reason that I might pick one over the other?
I'm also thinking of the merlin S720 for a modem.
Thanks for your help! |
routers are not rev-0 or rev-a. they route whatever the card in it can handle.
the topglobal does not restrict speeds, and works with many more cards than linksys.
lastly... the S720 suffer the same inconsistent performance as U720.
the best card for grabbing signal when used with omni external is the AC595. |

quick comment on omni vs. yagi.
you have signal ranging from -75 to -105, but we don't really know for sure how many towers that represents, or why the range is occuring.
so lets say you get a yagi and point at tower that gives you -75
but the reason you have a range, is because that tower is having issues and is disappearing on occasion. (yes, purely hypothetical, but it could happen)
if you are using a yagi, instead of dropping to next best tower, you are dead.
with an omni, at least you have choices of all towers within range.
if you can get -75 without an external antenna, you should be able to get it more reliably with an omni.
the yagi proponents will be on this thread soon enough to provide their expertise.
they are right in that if you know where the tower is, and want to lock onto that one tower for best possible signal... go with a yagi.
just keep in mind that it limits options. |

This is exactly the reason I ultimately went with an omni: I wanted to automatically switch to the next best tower if my closest one ever went down. And I already knew I did have another tower close enough to connect to.
It's something to keep in mind when choosing antenna type. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

Hrm. The tech I talked to on the phone at 3G actually recommended the S720.... Did I order the wrong card? |

sorry jfulmer. i didn't complete my sentence/thought.
the s720 is part of same novatel *720 series/family of devices, none of which have consistently good performance/compatibility with the wilson omni external antennas.
i didn't mean to imply the s720 by itself or any of the *720 devices performed inconsistently by themselves. i actually love them.
but when they need improved signal, i only recommend the booster antenna or magmount, and our 3watt amp when neither of those is enough. |

Hrm. I ordered/have one of those, too...
But then again, the signal has been rock solid with it... now if I could only figure out why Sprint all of a sudden keeps dropping me (another thread)... |
