It's already available on the VZW website, but the stores have none yet.

It depends on the Verizon Store and the location of the store. Many stores on the east coast and midwest have had it for a few weeks.

In my testing of the card, I did not expect the 5740 to perform as well as the other cards that have passed through here. I figured that it would be second-rate because the cost was so much lower. To my suprise, I found the card performed almost identically to the others in optimal RF conditions.

If you use the card in a vehicle, the lack of external antenna support will be a factor for you. If you carry an external antenna for those moments when you are in a conference room, this might not be your card. If you don't care, then you should seriiously consider the 5740.

More exhaustive testing is under way for the next 10 days. (Various RF environments, hands-off, hand-up/down, and a huge list of tests designed to guarentee the best possible customer experience.) I'll post any unusual findings here.

Zorog, can you get me a measurement on the antenna housing? Most interested in the total height or thickness of that end of the card, so I can be sure the cases I am developing will accomodate the modular antenna.

Thanks, Bruce

Believe it or not - the PC5740 card performed absolutely identical to the Kyocers 650 card without external antennas.

The card hands up, down, and across at exactly the same intervals while in motion, and the drap-til-you drop distances were within a few feet.

Bottom line - If you need to use external antennas, go with the 650. If you will never need that feature, the 5740 seems to work just as well at a lower price!

Zorog,

Thanks for the reports.

The only other advantage of an external antenna port (besides an external antenna), is that when you are in a signal challenged area, you have the option of signal amplifiers as well. In our tests, and others that have done tests, signal amplifiers can really help (if you need them).

Also, if SARS becomes important (or is important to you), you can deflect all that RF energy away from you, through an external antenna (which needs an antenna port).

Does anyone know who is making the PC5740 for UTStarcom/Audiovox? I understand it is being made by another company just like the PC5220 was made by Sierra Wireless.

Thanks

According to the firmware on the USB side of the card, it's made by Curitel Communications, Inc.

I got two of the PC5740 cards in today, and after installing the software on two different XP Systems now have seen two systems that would not run.
One XP Pro System with all the current MS patches we were able to get back to normal, but the other one keeps crashing with an error regarding the RPC service has been shut down.
Has anyone else seen this? Any idea how to get running again?

Thanks,
- - Steve

You might go to the VZW site and see if the version you have installed is the one needed for that card. I have found that different cards need different versions of the software.

The version I installed came on the CDs with the adapters. the overall problem at this point is, I can only run the system for about 90 Seconds before a hard crash. This isn't enough time to find a restore point to recover the 0S.

Thehy have a special toll free number for wireless data support, and you can actually get through to a person (I did it yesterday). Give that a try.
