Yea Crying or Very sad

KR1 has always been kept in a open area on my desk. Nothing within one foot of it. Crazy, couple of weeks ago I started smelling a fishy smell. I kept yelling at my wife "What the heck is that fish smell!" It was driving me nuts.

The smell would come and go. Maybe last 30-45min a few times a day. Then it would disappear. I searched high and low in my computer room for something the cat could have brought in, but nothing.

Anyways, a few hours ago it got beyond the "slight hint of fish" smell. It got really rough. It was then that I realized it smelled more like electrical wires melting. I quickly unplugged everything in the computer room and inspected all the devices one by one. The bottom of the KR1 had melted and warped the metal.

I'm still not sure what caused it. We've never had any power shortages. House is kept around 70-72 degrees. We dust often.

KR1 with Merlin S720. Gotta say it was an awesome device while it lasted. And I will probably pick up another one on pay day. We live in a county island where only dial up is available. I would normally get 1250 down and 180 up. Played WoW with 196-250 latency Exclamation

Anyways. If you smell something fishy. Flip your Kr1 over and make sure its not melting! I ramble =D

Take care
Patrick

If he doesn't take your offer, I'll take it if you are in the US.

Found Reason For Melting
My side of the room. (My computer, screen, light, router) are run off a power outlet that is controlled by a typical on/off switch. Even with router unplugged I was still smelling something bad last night after posting.

The on/off switch for the outlet was bad. Was toasty =D . I guess that is what caused the KR1 troubles. Too little current, maybe.

Thanks for the KR1 offer. However, I must decline. I'll probably buy from 3Gstore for the Warranty and extra support if I ever need it. Very Happy

Lol, I'll try and get a picture taken!

Take care!

I use an APC Battery Backup and a Professional Surge Arrest with an off switch and 6 plugs. Both have surge arrest and offer some protection against large amounts of power surging to them.

You might consider protecting your computer equipment using something like this.
