Just received my RAZR V3C from Verizon today.
I called them to find out about a "Mobile Office" solution for phone book syncing with a computer and tethered (usb) Internet access (I've been doing this for years with my T720 and Startac) and they said they had none - and they implied that using the phone for Internet access may void my ToS.
Anyone know of good software for Phone Book syncing - and anyone know if tethered or untethered (bluetooth) Internet access (3G) is possible through Verizon and how I would go about doing it?
Thanks in advance for your help. |

I have had the Razor for a couple days. I use Mac OS 10.4 and have been able to get the phone to sync via bluetooth with iSync.
I have not been able to log onto the EVDO or 1xRT networks via bluetooth of USB. Using the same settings as I used for my Motorola v710 I am kicked off during the Authentication Prossess when logging in. I receive an eror of "Authentication Failed" when I dial in.
I have the National Access Enhanced 900 min Plan. Prior to getting the phone I have the 800 min plan, I am told the plan I have not is Exactly the same just with 100 more minutes. Today I activated the V Cast service just too see if that would help, it did not. Any ideas, simular or different experiences? |

I've been trying to get the straight scoop from Verizon on tethering phones via USB. We have several Verizon users wanting to do this but I can't get a straight answer from Verizon. Verizon apparently doesn't officially support tethering, not sure.
Sprint allows tethered EVDO phones for $25/month for 40MB and a KB charge that maxes to $70/month.
Anyone have the straight scoop on Verizon tethering? |

Verizon's Terms of Service does not allow it.
HOWEVER...
Starting with the BlackBerry 7130e, they now have an option for "tethered use" (see 7130e Press Release).
They support tethering via a USB cable not BlueTooth and appear to only have Windows drivers not Mac for tethered modem use. Keep in mind, that BlueTooth would be a slow way to go even if it worked.
I am guessing that Verizon will do the following:
- On new PDA / Pocket PCs / BlackBerry they will start offering the tethered modem option.
- On phones, they probably will NOT offer the tethered modem option.
I would also guess, that it depends on what Sprint does.

Well, for me the path of least resistance was buying Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools (MPT) from bvrp.com, the company that wrote the app for Motorola.
The installation process was not as clean as one would like; with two machines so far requiring many many reboots in order to get the software to launch (Norton products may or may not have played a role). Once the app is up and running, be sure to use their "Live Update" feature to bring the software up to the latest version. Then, when you plug your Razr in and get the hardware wizard, be sure to specify the driver location C:\program files\mobile phone tool\inf\"your operating system".
The program uses USB, Bluetooth or Infrared. I have only tried USB so far. Speaking of which, the software didn't recognize my phone when plugged into the front ports on my Dell desktop. I learned that some front USB ports don't handle AT commands (at least that was the excuse I was given). I connected to a rear USB port and everything was fine.
As is already documented, Verizon's firmware has locked a number of features that this program would normally be able to affect. However, the Phonebook software is pretty well designed and syncs to Outlook. I haven't tried the Calendar syncing because I just don't use that feature in Outlook.
From several posts I've read, internet access via EVDO appears not to be possible at this time - and so I haven't bothered to sign up for it. I did try a tethered (USB) 1XRTT connection using this software and it lookied like it was going to work. The software established a network connection, my computer indicated a speed of 115.2Kbs (typical for 1XRTT), the phone indicated a speed of 14.4Kbs - but after connecting it sure felt like 115.2Kb/s.
Anyway, it aint EVDO - but it's something. Don't know about the ToS risk though. |

Check out Sprint's Blade phone that competes with Razr. Official USB tethering and no BlueTooth limitations...
Only thing I don't like about Razr/Blade is that they don't have memory expansion slots to store media. The next versions will though. If you don't intend to store lots of media (mp3/video), the current Blade might be good enough. |

There is a program called Motorola Phone Tools 3.0, however it doesn't seem to recognize the RAZR V3C, it gets stuck on initializing and it cannot communicate, tried usb and bluetooth. This is for Windows and syncs with Outlook.
If anyone has (or knows where to find) updated Razr V3C drivers, please post them here.
For Mac users, there is a way to modify iSync 2.1.1 to recognize the Razr and it actually works great. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |
