| I am looking to power the KR1 for 10-15 hours while out in the field. What are my options? |

| A small Radio Shack DC->AC Inverter if you're going to be in your car. |

How about a motorcycle battery or gel cel with the inverter?

| A couple years ago I used something like this to run my laptop during an extended power outage (uses deep cycle marine (gel) battery): How to Construct a Portable Power Supply. Worked pretty well! |

| i've often thought about spending the money on a couple of these, to see how long they would last: Socket Li-On Battery |

Those don't appear to have a built-in inverter, they're good batteries but only DC output. With a decent inverter, there isn't too much waste in getting to 110VAC and then all the normal AC adapters work without any fuss.
I think the convenience of an all-in-one might outweigh the slight hit on efficiency for a general usage gadget. I don't know how much current the KR1 requires but it is likely to be on the order of 5V at .5 to 1 A. That's 3-5 watts and a 4Ampere-hour RC Ni-Cad pack should be able to provide 50 watt-hours for $20 or $30 ( or so).
Thus a (say) 12 or 14V RC battery and a cheap 50 watt inverter might run a KR1 or similar for 10-20 hours directly. Also good for charging the multiple devices with wall-warts most of us have accumulated.
Maybe someone kind find a source for a nice integrated package for not too much money.

I have that exact battery that I use with the adapter cable for the KR1, and it runs my KR1 and S720 for about 4-6 hours. I couldn't be happier with the setup, it's great for moving from place to place and not having to hook into a power source. I bought the KR1, cable, and S720 from 3Gstore (of course! ), but I already had the Socket battery. It's very handy, I have used it to charge all of my handheld stuff via USB, and it still has plenty left afterwards.
One nice benefit - I can plug in the Socket's AC adapter into the wall and charge the battery *and* power the KR1 at the same time thru the USB port on the battery. The KR1 seems to be very thrifty when it comes to power, much less than many other routers.
I doubt two battery packs could be chained, but it's easy enough to switch from one to the other with just a few minutes of KR1 downtime. This would give 8-12 hours or so from two packs each the size of a 3.5" hard drive.
Check out this thread I posted a few weeks back regarding my mobile setup:

Basically, this case lets me carry around my KR1 and have all necessary power adapter, cables, etc to be able to use the router anywhere I want, in any situation. |

The KR1 user guide puts the power input at 5V 3A. Of course, that may just be the output capability of the wallwart; but the power could be as high as 15W.
Just an FYI. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

The KR1 uses 600mA at 12v, or 1A at 5V, give or take.
I was just in the AmBest truck stop next to my motel they had a Tracker 900 A jumpstarter for $15, 18Ah which would run the KR1 for about 18 hours. |

So the router battery cable from Kyocera plugs into the router via the normal power supply input and then it can be plugged into a laptop's USB port to power it?
Also, although these are some great solutions, I need a more portable solution for when I travel via the airlines. |

Google "XPower Power Source Mobile 100"... It's a 4.0Ah LiON battery so I'm not sure if it'll make it to your 10-15 hour requirement but it's an option.
I use a Xantrex Powerpack 600HD but that isn't exactly airline friendly but with 28Ahr battery, 12VDC outlet (for the KR1) and three 120VAC grounded outlets (1 for notebook with two left for anything else)... It's great. =) |
