|

First Off- I have been watching the KR1 GPS forum, and I've downloaded and played with the modified firmware. My hat is off to you guys, the ideas you have come up with have been great.
Here's my question. I would like to be able to use the KR1 for backup serial out of band management of network gear. I've gotten it to work with the special serial adapter and modified firmware on the GPS forum, the same way that is used to hook up an external GPS. However, I would like to add some security to this before I roll it out. Does anyone know if it is possible to modify the firmware to run SSH or another encrypted protocol to the serial port?
Ideally
--> SSH over IP EVDO ---> KR1 --> KR1 Serial port outbound to Cisco Console/Aux Port
We've been demoing the Digi EVDO routers that have this function, but they are about $950 a piece. If we can get the Kr1 to do the same function, it would save us a lot of money.
Please let me know if you have any ideas!
Thanks!!!!!!

Short answer is yes, but it would require adding an SSH server (like dropbear) to the KR1. I have a build directory and think I've even tried it in an early version of my GPS firmware.
One warning is though the system can be encrypted, unless you build your own bix files (this is not that hard though), the SSH key will be the same for every firmware which defeats the purpose to some extent.
The other hiccup is the KR1 doesn't like the serial port to be opened more than once, but that can be handled with a serial server program. |
