| Quote: | The specs on Flarion are: 1mb - 1.5mb download speeds, with peak bursts of 3.2mb and a typical upload speed of 300K - 500K with bursts of 900K.
With Flexband, the user rates double. A single 1.25MHz Flexband carrier sector will be able to deliver peak downlink data rates of 5.3Mbps, 1.8Mbps uplink, 2.5Mbps sustainable sector throughput and consistent high-speed data performance of up to 800Kbps at the cell edge. This performance enables operators to deliver a seamless mobile broadband experience across their entire network.
This technology sounds comparable to EVDO Rev A, which will be deployed in the next 1 - 2 years. |

Qualcomm to Acquire Flarion Technologies
I have heard from a few people who were Flarion users and they were VERY impressed with the service. If you have used Flarion, please post your comments here, also, what do you think Qualcomm will do with this technology?
Make it disappear so EVDO Rev A will do better?
Make it part of a EVDO Rev B down the road? _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| Quote: | QUALCOMM and Flarion Announce Termination of Hart-Scott-Rodino Review of Proposed Merger
SAN DIEGO — January 16, 2006 — QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, and Flarion Technologies, a pioneer and leading developer of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex Access (OFDMA) technology and the inventor of FLASH-OFDM® technology for mobile broadband Internet protocol (IP) services, announced that on January 13, 2006 the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice terminated its review of the proposed merger of the two companies under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act. The Act requires parties to certain acquisitions to notify the antitrust authorities in advance of the acquisition and to observe a waiting period to allow the antirust agencies to determine whether to object to the transaction. The termination of the Antitrust Division's review of the merger means that the requirements of the Act have been satisfied, and QUALCOMM and Flarion expect to close the merger in the next few days.
As previously announced, QUALCOMM will pay approximately $600 million in QUALCOMM stock and cash, including the assumption of options and warrants at fair value. Upon the satisfaction of certain milestones, QUALCOMM may also pay an additional $205 million in the form of cash and QUALCOMM stock.
Headquartered in Bedminster, N.J., Flarion Technologies has developed and deployed FLASH-OFDM mobile broadband since 2000. Flarion's product line consists of the RadioRouter® base station, FLASH-OFDM modems, embedded chipsets and system software to create an end-to-end network for mobile operators (www.flarion.com).

Had it and loved it (Nextel Broadband). I would always get 1.5Mbps+, even screaming down the highway, and the latency was non-existent.
EV-DO is pretty good and the footprint sure is a lot better, but being on Flarion was like being on a WLAN all the time.
The latency is the biggest difference. Gaming from Panerra was kinda cool!

Last summer Sprint was weighing Flarion vs. WiMAX seeming to have no commitment either way at the time. Recent reports indicated Sprint seemed to be favoring WiMAX lately - wonder if they saw this coming.
Flarion looks very promising but the cards may not fall into place.

Qualcomm purchasing Flarion puts them back into the race in a big way. I do wonder what it means for EVDO though. Will EVDO go the way of the Dodo if Qualcomm switches to Flarion? Isn't Qualcomm a technology driver for EVDO? _________________ Victor |
