Hello All, I am a noob in the evdo realm and am trying to get up to date with all the tech stuff.

I ordered a U720 directly from sprint and I got it today, but the USB Y cable was not in the box!!!

I called sprint and they cannot sell me one and cannot send me one, they need to send me out another modem and I do not have the time for the exchange procedure!!!

Sprint has really let me down on this and will not ship it out next day to guarantee that I recieve it in time and will not make sure to check the next modem I recieve will have the Y cable in it so i do not have the same problem!!!! This blows !!!!!!!!!!!

I am going off to truck drivers school next wednesday and will be in school for 3 weeks and then out with a trainer for 4 weeks so I will not be around for at least 2 months!!! Is there anyone or anyplace that I could get one of these Y cables quickly???

I would buy another USB modem if I could be sure that I could get it by wednesday, but since it is memorial day weekend and everywhere is closed on Monday I couldn't be sure to get it in time...

I just need to ask all the other U720 owners out there,

Did you get Y cables with your modems???

Thanks for listening and hope someone can help...

Jeff

Did you completely search the box, i.e., remove any packaging material? Someone else previously reported not receiving the Y-cable but later it found it covered by some of the packaging material at the bottom.

I checked the box, no Y cable, Sprint can't even tell me if the Y cable is supposed to be in it or not...I had to talk to tech support and find out it is supposed to be included...I got a single USB extension in my card box...

I found one on amazon.com made by apricorn but not sure if it is USB 1.1 or 2.0...I am gonna send this modem back and go and pick one up locally if I can't find one to purchase...

I thought about contacting 3gstore.com but they have them shipped directly from sprint and would take the same amount of time...And since this is Memorial day weekend I will have to wait until tuesday and i leave wednesday...I might have to put off school for a week if I can...I don't know...

I got an extra 50.00 credit on my account plus the 50.00 rebate, plus free shipping and free activation on this card so I saved a bundle, but it doesn't help when I don't have the cable I need...

do you know where to get the Y cable i need?

The Y-cable is not necessary for the U720 to work, if that's your impression. It is provided because sometimes the modem needs more power than one USB port can provide or to enhance a poor signal. Most of the time the U720 should work adequately just connected directly to one USB port. However, if you really want a Y-cable, you can contact Novatel Wireless, the manufacturer of the U720, directly. Their website should have contact information.

I do understand that I do not need the Y cable for it to function, but every other person who has bought one has gotten one of the Y cables except for me!!!!

I am becoming a truck driver and will be all over the US and will be, I am sure, in areas with questionable signal strength, so that is why I decided to get this card instead of the EX720 so I could get the device away from the computer for less interferance and to be able to boost the RF with more power via the Y cable!!!

My whole issue is that I do not have time to deal with this, I will be calling novatel on Tuesday as well as apricorn to find out if their offering is USB 2.0 or not and if I can not get a cable I will be calling Sprint and having them take this POS back!!!

I will figure something out, but My whole reason for posting this was to see if anyone knew where i could buy a Y cable so i could get this over with and be done with it instead of playing phone tag with the people over at sprint...

I also planned on buying a RF antenna and probably a amp for this unit so i can get good signal pretty much every where I am...

Thanks...

P.S. the only one I found was on amazon and was made by apricorn, but it doesn't say if it is USB 1.1 or 2.0...Maybe you would be able to tell??? It says it is made to be used with the aegis series of products...

You are considering buying an aftermarket cable...

What does that cable cost ?

Locate the nearest Sprint store that offers the U720.

Go in there, in person.

Bring along your complete box and everything that came with it.

Go in, humble, with hat in hand, not angry. You are asking a favor that this person does not have to give you.

Explain to the store manager what happened.

Offer him/her the price of the aftermarket cable if s/he will trade cables with you.

Then s/he can put your cable back into the box that s/he takes your replacement cable out of, and send it back to Sprint as being defective, or having arrived with the wrong cable.

Or just exchange the complete set for a new one. Sounds like even if you lose your rebate or whatever, it may be worth it to you.

Well, my cable issue has been resolved, I emailed Novatel last night and Tony over at novatel emailed me back this morning and said that he would ship one out to me Tuesday and would make sure that it got to me before I left!!!!

I did talk to all the sprint stores here in vegas and none of them would do the cable exchange or exchange the whole system for me...They offered to sell me a new one and then I could ship this one back to Sprint for a refund but none of them would do the cable or modem exchange...

One manager at wireless toyz tried to help...,Serena took my number so she could call me back, she got onto the internet and called a few people for me and helped me look which I thought was nice but there is not one of these types of cables in the whole Las vegas area...

It is all handled now thanks to Tony and Novatel wireless...

BTW, I checked our support ticket system and there was one report of this happening to a customer, so there may be a trend.

We already email Novatel of the situation.

Hopefully, it is just an isolated few.

I got my Sprint U720 USB Modem and did not find any Y-cable in the box. Could you give me the email of Tony in Novotel so that I could have my issue resolved instead of the run around from Sprint. Thanks!

I'm really happy with services I got from Tony of Novatel. He send me Y-cable promptly. Especially with the disappointment of hearing lvjeffro's frustration with Sprint, Tony's customer service is refreshing. I would strongly recommend Novatel's product as long as they have Tony. Kudo to Tony! I would also like to thank lvjeffro for sharing his experience with us in this forum. Y-cable did help me got a bit stronger signal. I hope Novatel continue to ship it.

More info at:

http://evdoinfo.blogspot.com/2007/06/sprint-drops-u720-usb-y-cable.html

Including this quote we received from Novatel:

Quote:
When the U720 was originally launched the Y cable was included in case additional power was needed. Since that time we have received market feedback and have completed intensive testing that suggests that a Y cable for increased power would only be needed .22% percent of the time, e.g. fringe coverage areas, etc. In Jan. '07 we presented the data to our customer and they agreed to remove the cable out of the kit.
