|
|
EVDOinfo originally reported Amp'd Mobile a few months back.
This fall, a new phone & service will be available that targets 18 - 35 year olds. The Amp'd Mobile service will use Verizon's EVDO network, but will be a "private label" service, just like Virgin Mobile piggybacks on the Sprint network.
The products offered by Ampd will be video, music and 3D Games. With Verizon EVDO offering speeds between 300K - 500K with bursts of 2mb, this is the type of bandwidth that is needed.
You will be hearing A LOT about Amp'd later this year after they officially launch their products and services.
Amp'd has raised 67 million in the venture funding, so they have the bucks to make a big entry.
My Take on Amp'd Mobile....
EVDO is a shared bandwidth technology. There is only so much bandwidth to go around. The more that people are downloading music and watching videos on their phones via Ampd, the less bandwidth the rest of us have. Sure, this is a selfish statement, however, if Amp'd mobile becomes hugely successful, doesn't that mean that we will be seeing slower speeds on EVDO? At what point does the 400K - 700K average drop? Hopefully, Verizon will not over sell their bandwidth and expand cell sites bandwidth to keep up with the demand of BroadbandAccess users.

I'd hope they'd consider the higher-paying BroadbandAccess users packets to be of a higher priority than entertainment packets.
Of course, if the content is real-time vs. download-and-play, which the press releases seem to indicate is the case, it's more likely they'd have to prioritize THAT content to make it flow smoothly. That would make me unhappy.

| Any ideas about when AMp'd Mobile is launching? I've read different dates, but as long as it's before the holiday shopping season, I'll be happy! |

Only comment I will make is Verizon better start adding more T1s. In Denver alone Verizon people are drooling for Amp'd mobile. I can see bandwidth hogging heaven when they launch. lol... _________________ EVDO Addict. |
