|
|
I've Googled the hell out of PCMCIA to USB Adapters (and the like) but have come up with only product-specific PCMCIA cradles via USB. The idea is to throw a Mac mini into my 2004 Mazda RX-8 and use a Verizon EVDO card for net access with an antenna booster. *ANY* suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Idealy, it would be as simple as finding some sort of "dock" or "cradle" in which to insert the EVDO card and plug that into the mini via USB2.0 or FireWire.
I *could* just plug the EVDO into my PowerBook G4 and share the connection via AirPort but then I'd have to keep the PowerBook in the car whenever I want net access via the mini...
Please help... _________________ SGT Carlos "Chuck" Castillo

Unfortunately, there are no Cardbus compatible 1 or 2 slot adapters that connect via USB. All the EVDO cards are Cardbus cards.

well that just sucks, doesn't it how about running an interneal pcmcia reader via pci on a PC? do those support cardbus? if they do, i can just throw some crappy 'ol pc in the trunk and use it strickly for the evdo card and share that to the mini via ethernet... _________________ SGT Carlos "Chuck" Castillo

It would make more sense to build a stompbox - they do have an ethernet port as well as the wireless.

PERFECT! Thank you Brandon for answering my question! The good folks at http://www.stompboxnetworks.com/ have a very spedivid how-to on building the thing. This should be a fun project... a couple of trips to Fry's and I should be on my way! Thanks again! _________________ SGT Carlos "Chuck" Castillo

Or just wait a few months for the Kyocera KR1 EV-DO to Wi-Fi Router. Estimated cost $190. _________________ Motorola Q News - http://www.qusers.com |

Another good approach. Have you heard anything of Verizon using the Kyocera cards or of the KR1 using the 5220's? _________________ SGT Carlos "Chuck" Castillo

Okay, Verizon DOES use the KPC650 which will obviously be supported by the KR1... awesome news... I see that the Arc antenna ups 3dB and supports the KPC650... also cool... I guess now I just wait for the KR1 to come out and get to chopping up the car's interior! (are you guys planning on getting a bunch of KR1's and selling them for less than $190???)
Thanks for all the help guys! _________________ SGT Carlos "Chuck" Castillo

A good idea too, but from what I've seen Kyocera indicates a December 2005 release timeframe for some reason.
