I'm curious about what protection vs lightning I need with an external Omni?
The antenna is on my roof and runs from there to my Kyo650 in a KR1. Thats an awful lot of expensive equipment NOT counting the computers wired to it. I have surge protectors on all my equipment including this one BUT how do I protect against lightning. I realize that nothing is 100% but what can I do to perhaps minimize it?
Grounding, arrestor, coax surge protector?
I'm in Southern Missouri where we get some "interesting" weather. I've already planned to totally disconnect the cable during storms but they can come up real fast out of a clear sky here. I've heard more than one story of significant loss of livestock due to strikes.. To top it off I'm on the highest piece of land about (guess that's why I get nice coverage so far from the marked areas)
So help me out here!
thanks

Using a Lightning Arrestor is definitely what you want.
This will protect YOU and your equipment in the best was possible. _________________ - Victor |

I've also heard that some home owners insurance companies could use the failure to install lightning arrest systems to decline coverage for any damage that might have resulted from a strike/near strike. _________________ --Larry |

How about flying a kite with some keys dangling from it during a storm? |

I appreciate the info. I'm definitely leaning toward an arrestor at this time. I've had similar protection on alternative power systems in the past. My concern was how much signal loss could I expect.
Larry you're probably right. So many insurance comps are looking for ways to limit, negate or even cancel insurance. Between my wife and I we've both worked in that field for too long.
coupla examples. there's a lot of companies pulling out of states where the law allows claims for mold problems.
Two personal ones. The house we live when purchase, we tried to get Insurance. One policy refused because there had been a minor claim for fire damage by the previous owners (no damage that I can find) Another refused because the fireplace insert didn't have a label plate by the manufacturer.
But by far the best was when the company that did write us realized we had goats. They were concerned that we were breeding them and thus had a higher risk chance. Regardless of the fact that I explained these were two pet geldings and the odds of breeding were slim (I even explained what a gelding was) they paid an inspector to drive 100 miles each way to photograph them!
So yep Insurance companys are getting more fun to deal with daily.
