Now that Dell has announced a plan to sell PC's with Linux as an alternative
to a proprietary MS version of windows the numbers of Linux users will swell
even more rapidly.
Can someone provide an overview of the current status of Linux support in
the EV-DO world of Rev A devices?
In my case I have slightly older laptops with PCMCIA and USB (1.1) ports,
no ExpressCard port, so I'd like to see that addressed rather than the assumption
that all users have ExpressCard ports.
Also, it would be valuable to discover more about Linux and the various EVDO
Routers.
We are currently with Alltel here in Florida for cell and Verizon for DSL and
landline, one cellphone is due for renewal soon and we'd like to explore
moving everything to a single provider.
I may have misread but it sounds as though Alltel has the best coverage
for travelers, especially now that their users have access to Sprint towers.
(Can someone clarify something? I am told that Alltel doesn't own any
towers but is just a reseller. Is that true?)
We will also be doing some traveling and want decent EV-DO coverage on
the road -- with special focus on southeast GA between Savannah and
Statesboro where we will be spending some time.
Can I acquire a whole package through a company like 3Gstore.com or
must I deal with the often-unresponsive big corporations?
Thank you for this Forum! |

somehow managed to miss this post... sorry about that.
yes you can get an entire package of EVDO Gear from 3gstore.com
while we will definitely be far more responsive and give much better customer and tech support than the carriers themselves...
i must still admit that our linux support is going to be weak at best.
however, you should look over this recently released "linux setup guide" from sprint...
and consider sprint evdo rev-a devices from 3gstore.com |

Thanks! I have saved and will print and read and try out the Sprint Linux info.
It should work across providers.
I will also have a look at the 3gstore.
Having heard nothing on ths Forum I had to do something re. the phone renewal
due in May so I upgraded one phone via Alltel with a Motorola e815 but have not
yet purchased the data access package.
Our other phone is due for renewal in the Fall and depending on the
performance of Alltel on the data side I may be looking to switch to
Sprint.
Thanks! doc |

Alltel is a nationwide cellular carrier. It has the largest geographic coverage in the nation. _________________ Rich McKenzie |
