What's the difference between speed Laptops with Embedded Sprint EVDO, Sprint EVDO Card and Sprint EVDO Cell Phone as modem (for example PPC6700)?

The only difference in speeds would be attributable to the placement of the antenna. For example, tethering a phone as a modem should provide better reception (and thus greater speeds) because the antenna (the phone) can be extended away from the computer itself which is a source of RF interference. (For a different reason, however, tethering a phone as a modem is problematic because the phone relies on its own internal battery when its acts as a modem). A computer with embedded EVDO would seem to be more able to receive a signal and consequently provide greater speeds because the antenna is extended throughout the internal housing of the notebook, but real world tests have shown that not to be the case.

Currently I'm using ppc6700 as modem... looks like there is no reason to buy connection card or upgrade laptop - speed will be the same.

The speeds should be about the same compared to other Rev 0 devices. However, since the PPC6700 is a Rev 0 device it can't take advantage of the lower latency and faster speeds of the newer Rev A version of EVDO.

Well, what kind of speeds are you getting with your 6700? In many cases I've seen where data cards have shown a significant gain in speeds over the 6700 and other phone as modem situations.

I myself have Moto Q, a PC5740 card (with Alltel) and a U720 card with Sprint. The Q averages around 800kbps while both the data cards average in the 1200 to 1500kbps range. (the U720 has suffered from slower DL recently since Rev A was turned on here.) That's pretty significant to me and the U720 is a Rev A device and now that my area has gone Rev A and things are beginning to settle back down I'm seeing DL's creep back over the 1000kbps mark and my UL's are hanging in around 400 to 500kbps. It seems to me that in a lot of cases the phone's speeds are somewhat limited. Possibly by their processors? Some are even reportedly capped around 500kkbps. But unless you really need the dedicated wireless connection you probably wouldn't see much reason to go with a data card and it's $60 per month price tag. Everything you wanted to know about the PPC 6700 but were afraid to ask is here: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/Sprint-PPC-6700.htm

The review states: "EVDO is live in the San Francisco Bay Area and the phone got up to 849 kbit/s in 4 bar reception areas, 524 kbit/s in 2 bar areas and 300 kbit/s in barely 1 bar areas." Whether this was the 6700 tethered as a modem or not, I can't tell.

I'm getting ~290/80 ppc as modem, 3-4 bars. It really slow. 4 month ago I signed up for Sprint Pantech. But canceled service after few weeks - speed was just a little bit higher. May be it's just my area (atl, 30360)?

According to Sprint's map, 30360 is covered by EVDO Rev A so you should be getting much higher speeds.

Definitely check out a different modem other than the Pantech. Maybe the Sierra Wireless 595U which is Rev A USB modem. You can use it not only in a notebook but a desktop as well. If reception is a problem, the Sierra 595U comes with a cable which can serve as an extended antenna.

Speed does get crunched on occassion but in Okeechobee and Broward county I get 1 Meg speeds consistently on my U720 and MacBook Pro. This can drop during the busy times.
