I had a conversation with the president of the company and their USB EVDO modems ARE compatible with:

Quote:
Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, MAC and Linux

Unfortunately, they are not yet approved by Verizon or Sprint, so they cannot currently be activated for use. They have 3 different designs and these products look very interesting and promising:

I just started researching evdo; the laptop I am considering does not have a pcmcia slot. I am hoping between this company and/or falcom, a usb evdo modem is announced soon. Lack of pcmcia slots are becoming more common and in my opinion short sighted on the pc manufacturers.

Does a particular modem have to be authorized by verizon to be activated? I am currently using a GSM phone for voice, which does not have these issues.

WHO are they building these devices for if all they are good for at the moment is to serve as itty bitty bookends?!

What is this, a STRIP-tease?!

I just spoke with Mr. Kim too, their company President. He told me that they've already sold over 10 million of these devices in other countries all around the world including other big countries like Australia and China where evdo also exists.

He told me that they are working diligently on getting approval with Verizon and Sprint (he seemed to imply that they were closer to getting approval with Sprint) and that they were several months ahead of Falcom's progress.

Falcom itself has told me that they are still working on their software drivers and Mr. Kim claimed that you can't even begin the testing part of getting the carrier's approval process (Sprint and Verizon) going until the software drivers are completed, which made sense to me.

This waiting is a major PITA. Twisted Evil

I agree - the waiting for the already developed technology to be made available by the carriers is really annoying.

Tom Friedman's column in the NY Times about the US being way behind in broadband applies. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/03/opinion/03friedman.html

FYI, the cdu550 (silver one that says Hi EVDO) is the only one that will be available for the US, since it's the only one that does the 1900MHz band in addition to the 800Mhz band.
