First, I'd like to say that I'm really happy to have found this forum. I've been using a Kyocera KPC650 aircard with Verizon for about 18 months all over the western US, have had questions a number of times and didn't have anyone to talk to about it except Verizon.
I just ran the above mentioned test on my connection and got the following results:
Connected to: netspeed.stanford.edu -- Using IPv4 address
Another client is currently being served, your test will begin within 45 seconds
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
checking for firewalls . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client-to-server [C2S]) . . . . . 98.0kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server-to-client [S2C]) . . . . . . 70.50kb/s
Your PC is connected to a Cable/DSL modem
Information: Other network traffic is congesting the link
[S2C]: Packet queuing detected
I do have a Dlink 3G router, but it's not connected. I'm using the aircard in my laptop connected to a Wilson amplifier. Is the test seeing the amplifier?
Thanks for your help. _________________ ComputerGranny |

The test you ran has no way of knowing whether you are using an amplifier or not. If your card is connected to the amplifier and the amplifier is turned on, then your wireless signal is being amplified. Unless your amplifier is broken of course.
With the values the test is reporting, it looks like you are connecting to 1xRTT instead of EVDO. _________________ Reach, Connect, Celebrate, Grow, Serve. |

Walter,
Thanks for the quick response!
The VZAccess Manager does show me to be getting a 1X signal. I'm currently in Pomona, CA and should be getting EVDO, but I'm not. That's partly why I'm trying to research all this. The last couple of months I've had a lot of trouble with the card switching back and forth between EVDO and 1X spontaneously. In both locations (Bullhead City, AZ and Pomona) I haven't had a very good signal so it's made it hard to identify if it's just a poor signal situation or if there's something else going on. I have the KPC650 card, but it has the correct firmware, so it's not that.
I'll keep reading the forum and see what else I can figure out. Thanks again. _________________ ComputerGranny |

| Have you updated the Preferred Roaming List (PRL) since you acquired the KPC650? The PRL is the file that tells VZAccess Manager what cellsites are EVDO and what are 1XRTT. You can update the PRL easily by disconnecting, and then selecting the "Activation" option from the "OPTIONS" menu. |

Sorry I didn't respond sooner.
Yes. I was told when I first got the card that "activation is my friend" and that I should activate each time I get into a new area. Since that is often almost daily at times, I activate each time we move just to play it safe. I didn't know what the name was that was being updated, though. Thanks for the info. _________________ ComputerGranny |

| For some reason, unlike Sprint, the Verizon software doesn't offer the feature of locking on to EVDO exclusively to prevent bouncing between 1XRTT and EVDO. |
