I got the pc5750 card today..
great, exciting right?
well I get home, its easy to install.. no issues there.
I'm actually posting this from the net with it connected right now. My issue?
I'm not getting EVDO.. only 1x.
This is dissappointing as alltel's map clearly shows me being in the EVDO area, and my brothers phone shows up with the EV symbol..but alltel's connection manager software shows me as 1x.
webpages load faster than on dial up.. but for 60 bucks a month, I gotta have faster than this.
i ran a speed test.. and i am getting 106kbps down and 13 up...
def. not EVDO.. How can I force it to connect to EVDO? or get a better signal.. my brothers phone had all 5 bars.. but this thing is only getting 2 bars.
what can I do!!!! |

Azmyth,
I just got my Kyocera RPC650 activated today and I'm not very impressed either. I'm in a 1x area, but was hoping to get a faster connection than my dial-up 28.8k.
Well I'm getting 130k down/50k up, but the connection latency is so awful that I can browse faster using my 28.8
Can anyone suggest ways to reduce ping time? |

ok..
somehow all of a sudden it switched to evdo..
i am still only getting 1 to 2 bars signal.. but i ran 2 speed tests.. and was getting between 256kbps and 350 down and about 50 up.
alot better.. I was streaming videos off youtube.. for a good 10 minutes. Sure it could still be better.. but I can deal with that.
then all of a sudden I start getting "this program has encountered an error and needs to close"..
wouldn't connect.. so i figure I will reinstall the software and card..
unsuccessful in doing either so far...
not happy right now. |

I can defend Alltel a little. In the South Carolina market the EVDO service is superior to Sprint or Verizon and I have access to all three. I use Verizon from work and it works well in a few areas. Sprint EVDO is NO Where in SC but I do have a S720 and it will roam on Alltel but very poorly and inconsistent.
Alltel however has a good presence in SC and my typical speeds are 1000K down and 70K up. Ping times are high, typically around 400ms. _________________ Tim Mayhugh |

Been messing with it all night...
this is the highest I have gotten... but it doesn't stay in EVDO mode very long before it switches to 1X.. not sure what I can do to get this consistently without spending more money.[/img] |

Azmyth, have you tried any of the tweaks found on this forum? Look here http://www.evdoforums.com/thread2001.html and here http://www.evdoforums.com/thread504.html
Also, since you're only getting 1 or 2 bars signal strength try moving your laptop (assuming that's what you're using) to different locations in and even outside your house to see if that makes a difference. Remember when you move your laptop around it takes a minute or so for the changes in reception to show up on your signal meter. (I have been using the KR1 so long and have no other way to use the Alltel card I can't even remember what the meter and Alltel software looks like and how it is set up.)
Be sure you have the latest version of the Alltel software. Don't assume the version on the disk is the latest. Look online. Be sure you've got the latest version of the card's firmware too. As new as that card is to Alltel I would assume it is the latest but you know what they say about assuming . . . . . .
Since you ARE getting EVDO the next steps you need to work on is to maximize your signal (which may involve a booster antenna) and the performance of your laptop. Give us the details of the machine you're using, OS, and all that stuff. To get as much help as possible from these forums it's best to provide as much info as possible.
Good luck! |

Ok, I tried the tcp trick.. but there is no option to choose the card in drtcp.. do I need to?
I am not even sure how to do the other link you gave.. maybe u could explain.
Right now, no matter where I move.. I get 1x..
it works.. but latency is high, and i can get better ping on dial up when trying to play WoW.
i only get evdo on rare occasions, and it doesn't seem to matter where I am in the house. I have had it switch to DO.. in different locations. I took my laptop for a ride down to where I think the tower is, and that didn't help either.
with Cable in the near future, I can't forsee spending 100s of dollars on something I am just gonna replace. If I could get an acceptable connection out of it, until then.. then that would be great.
the 500 down was perfectly acceptable.. if I could get that consistently. |

Well, I hate you're having these problems. You may simply be in a fringe area. Have you tried calling Alltel tech support? I know, I know . . . . but sometimes ya just have to bite the bullet. If you call them you may have to try multiple calls until you find someone who's ever even heard of EVDO. This apparently applies to all carriers too so don't think it's just Alltel. Just be polite and say thank you and hang up. Then call right back until you get someone who can - AND WILL - help you get to the bottom of this.
Tell them you think you're close enough to a tower that it should be working consistently. Maybe they can shed some light as to the nearest tower with their EVDO antenna on it. You really can't tell by those online maps positively. They are good for a reference but I've seen many times when there are new towers that don't show up for some time. Also, just because there's a tower with the Alltel cell antenna doesn't neccessarily mean it has their EVDO antenna.
Also, don't disregard the fact that you may have just simply gotten a bad card. It does happen. As a last resort try exchanging the card.
As for the data tuning, changing your HA, now that I thought about it I'm not sure that's even possible with Alltel's cards. That thread's for the Sprint cards. Sorry bout that. I'd be interested to find out if there's any way to access the HA settings for Alltel's card. Will find out and get back to you. I can't because, again, mine is always in the KR1 where there's no access to the card itself.
Good luck and keep us posted! |

I called alltel last night, I only spoke to 1 guy though.. he said "It should work anywhere".. he didn't even bother to ask where i was calling from or anything..
I'm assuming he was just thinking about 1X..
I'll try them again tonight...
he did say, that "for your area, you should be getting a better signal than that... your card might be bad.."
and then tried to sell me one from them.
so.. who knows.. |

When you reach Tech Support, insist on being transferred to the Data Support Group. These are the folks who are familiar with the aircards and datalinks.
Is your aircard EVDO or 1X? It could be the card. _________________ mjh |

| Can you lock the card in EVDO mode? I am roaming on Alltel using Sprints Connection manager with my Pantec card. Under the options, there is setting to only search for EVDO. |
