I ordered a Kyocera RPC650 and it came in today. I installed the software and the card into my laptop just to see what kind of signal strength I'm getting in the house before I activate the card. I'm getting 58% signal strength. What kind of speeds can I expect with this signal on a 1xRTT network?

On 1xRTT you will likely do no better than 100K down and 80K up. It is hard to say if you will achieve this all the time, but I have found 1X to be more consistent than EVDO

Well that's still a lot better than what I'm currently getting (28.8k)... so I'll go ahead and get it activated tommorow.

Alright, I got the card activated and have been playing around with it. According to SpeedTest.net, I'm getting 131k download/54k upload. That's very nice, but here's the kicker: my ping is 999ms.

I ran several trace routes and over 75% of my pings are 1000ms+... four of them were in the 2500ms range.

With latency this bad, casual browsing feels slower than my 28.8, even though large files download faster. Is there any way to lower the ping times?

Lord Flux.. this is exactly the boat I have found myself in...

my ping is alot better when I actually hit EVDO service.. but 90% of the time its on 1x..

ping is 999-1000+ no matter what.

I play wow.. and even on dial up, my ping is normally anywhere from 250-700... which is not good.. but, playable.

999ms ping is almost like we are using satellite internet.

I'd like to know how to get the ping lower, even on 1x.. because.. if the latency was lower.. it would still be better than dial.. but at the moment.. the only times i find it better than dial is when I pull the EVDO signal and thats for a few minutes only.

I was gonna try getting on my roof with my laptop when i get home.. to see if its a signal issue.. and if so might look into an antenna.. if its gonna be worth it.

my main concern is that cable is being slated to be added to my area.. that could mean a week, a month, a year.. who knows.. but its def. coming.. so I don't want to have invested alot of money in something I am gonna be tossing for cable next week.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that this service isn't meant to be used for online video streaming or gaming.

your right.. but I can bet more than half of the users use it for that..

why?

because we can't get anything else.

I'm not gonna pay 60 bucks a month to surf a few web pages and check my email.. when I can do that just as well for 6 bucks a month.

its not meant to be a "standalone" service either..

but yet they make routers specifically for the cards so you can do just that.

they will find that ToS mean about as much as someone telling you its not allowed.. unless they stop you from doing it.. people are gonna do it, if they can.

granted they do market it as business.. but.. why sell it to normal residents?
