AutoNet Mobile?
Sorry if this is old news, but has anyone else seen this? Looks like they're bundling a router and somebody's EVDO service and calling themselves a "mobile ISP" - $400 for the router plus $50/month. I wonder whose network they are using? I read somewhere that it might use multiple networks, locking on whichever carrier has the better signal at any given moment. Anybody else seen this? |

| Autonet Mobile has agreements with Sprint and Verizon. It uses both. |

Then that's not too bad of a deal - instead of sixty bucks for one or the other it's fifty bucks for both? I'll bet there's a catch somewhere. "If it sounds too good to be true..." |

So far it's still looking like vaporware. There's no details on the hardware. Just a description of all the cool things you can do with it (or with any other EVDO router, duh!) and a price. No way to actually purchase it.
Perhaps they are just testing the waters, and if they generate enough interest (enough people add themselves to their mailing list) then they'll see about finding a hardware solution that can use either or both carriers and go about making agreements with the carriers.
I'll believe it when it's a shipping product/service. |

These units are showing up on eBay now. Just search eBay for "Autonet."
There's still not much information available on the specifics of these units. I've also heard that the units are supposed to pull data from both Verizon and Sprint, but after inquiring about this recently, an Autonet representative left me with some doubt.
"There seems to be some confusion about Autonet ... Our service is a single provider and searches out the best signal or tower from our network but not the strongest of all networks."
I'm not sure what to make of that. I've responded asking him to explain what Autonet's "network" is but have yet to receive a reply.
Also, these units were originally scheduled to be available to the public last summer. The availability date continued to be pushed forward to the point that I began to question the stability of the company. |
