I live in a rural area of central Georgia and the only Internet access I currently have is using a 28.8 modem (my line is too noisy to support 56k -- I've had BellSouth look at it and they say it's fine). I've tried satellite out and I loved the speed boost, but the Fair Usage Policy was ridiculous (allowed 500MB a month and then they drop you down to 56k).
I'm a student and my mother is running a business out of the house. We both really need faster Internet access, so I've been looking at Alltel's MobileLink service. EVDO isn't currently available in my area.
Been looking at getting the Kyocera KR1 Router and Kyocera KPC650. I understand that the KPC650 doesn't support EVDO Rev A. Hoping by the time EVDO is available in our area, Kyocera will have the firmware issues straightened out with the newer cards.
Anyway, the reason I'm posting is:
What kind of speeds can I expect showing 3 bars in my upstairs computer room on my Alltel phone?
Can two people browse over the MobileLink connection with decent speed?
Does the MobileLink connection drop out frequently, and if so, how long does it take to reconnect?
Thanks so much. |

Thanks so much. | Hi LordFlux, you will probably be able to get DL speeds in the 120 to 144 kbps range with similar uploads. 1x generally gives you about 2 to 3 times what you actually get via 56k dialup. I remember when I went from dialup to 1x . . . I was ecstatic!! It felt like broadband!! So, I believe you will be very happy with it. Especially going from 28.8!!
It's been my experience that there is a negligible effect with 2 people browsing. I'm no expert in the router technology but my personal experiences in my house has seen a barely noticeable difference when we've had multiple users online.
As for dropping out frequently I have used my KR1 router with the old PC5740 card (before getting the new PC5740) without dropping out for days and sometimes weeks at a time. And it always came out of dormancy rather quickly. I just have never had a problem in those area.
Good luck!! Let us know how it goes! |

Sounds great, Bigdave. I placed an order for the card and router and anxiously awaiting their arrival.
It's a small world indeed, Azmyth. |
