I am currently a satellite internet user and am considering the jump to EVDO. The coverage map shows me just inside Sprint EVDO. I live in a heavily wooded area and was wondering if I should wait a few more weeks before the leaves are fully on the trees before starting my 30-day trial period.
Does anyone have any experience with signal strength dropping off as the leaves come on the trees? _________________ EVDO Wannabe |

| hey N4ST!, nice to see another person wanting to jump ship from WildBlue. I went ahead and ordered all my EVDO gear from 3Gstore on Friday. I am also surrounded by trees but always gotten a solid cell signal over all seasons. I am in a solid orange Sprint area with Rev B comming in a couple of months. I'll let you know how it goes. Good Luck! |

Hey! Yeah after 18-months of "this is way better than dial-up", the lure of lower latency is pushing me towards a switch. I always had good service from WB, but I know what real broadband feels like from work.
Wonder what equipment you are getting? I'm looking at the S720 card and the Linksys router. _________________ EVDO Wannabe |

Hi N4ST, Jim_in_VA, pops good to see you all over here. The WBU forum is getting vacant with many moving on to EVDO.
My WB contract is up at the end of September. WB service is ok for me at this time but if it goes down hill or if I have equipment failure I may be jumping over to Sprint EVDO. I can stand on the roof of my house and see the Sprint cell tower. I would make the jump without hesitation to EVDO except for the recent announcement by Sprint that Kansas City will be one of the 19 first cities to get WiMax in 2008. I don't want to get into a 24 month contract with EVDO and then have a much better service become available. Time will tell. |

I live in the middle of a wooded area and notice a change in my service when the leaves come out. The biggest affect I see is in the reliability of my connection vs. any drop in speed. I use the KR1 which doesn't like weak signals. Since my signal strength is weak year round any reduction makes the KR1 lock up more frequently. When there are no leaves I reset my KR1 3-5 times a week, and when there are leaves I have to reset it several times a day. I typically see signal strengths less than -95Dbm.
I have a KPC650 with Verizon and use an intellligain amp and an external trucker antenna which did help. I have had this setup since 10/05. |
