Hi,
Forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere, but can you help me understand whether I can successfully link a desktop with a USB EVDO modem, a KR1 router, and an Apple laptop that itself doesn't support the USB modem.
I plan to get a Novatel U 720 USB modem for my desktop PC and a KR 1 router (aware that it's reduced performance, but the only router option currently), with the intention of sharing my connection with an Apple Powerbook also in use in this household (the 12", bought in 2005). Will this work? Do I need to install software on the laptop, which is NOT the device using the USB modem? Or does the router itself make the connectivity possible?
Thanks,
Judy |

yes, you can connect the desktop and laptop units to the kr1 router, either by ethernet connection or built in airport/wifi.

Just so you know, you can use any router with the U720, you just need a computer to plug it in to.
It goes like this:
U720 <usb connection> PC <ethernet cable> Wireless router
However, the PC would need to be on when you want to share the connection.
If you have an extra PC lying around (hey some people do), this is a lot cheaper than the KR1 (a $50 router compared to the KR1's $300). |

After you overcome the obstacle, about bread crumb size, of activating the USB modem, you can do this using the PC assuming it has a USB port.
Then you can attach one or both of the computers to the KR1 via ethernet or wifi. Most likely the desktop via ethernet and the iBook via ethernet or wifi. If the 12" doesn't have a wifi modem installed, you can just use the ethernet or buy a card.
If you do wifi, it is important to password protect the connections to avoid the local 12 year old hacker, or even the 45 year old hacker. |

| Very helpful, thanks so much. I mistakenly thought I had to attach the U 720 directly to the router, hence dictating using the KR 1 with the modem port (phone port), but I get that instead I can attach the PC itself via cable to a router...cool! |

| You do need to attach the modem to KR1. Not doing so negates the need to have KR1. In addition to its routing functions, KR1 also provides a firewall, DHCP, and other network services that you do not get if you plug the modem directly into your computer. While you can use your computer to maintain the EVDO connection, by doing so you essentially turn KR1 into a very expensive switch. KR1 will completely manage the connection and provide additional services. You can connect USB modems that are supported to the USB port on the back and it will work. The U720 is not supported on currently released firmware but that should change soon. |
