I just received my new Macbook Pro about an hour ago (typing on it now. Smile)

Anyways, I'm looking to go with either Sprint or Verizon for my EVDO fix, but I'm trying to figure out which is better, the U720 USB or the V740?

If they perform the same upload/download and reception wise, I'll probably go for the U720, just because I can port the USB U720 to different machines instead of being a little locked in via an Expresscard.

However, if the performance / reception is quite a bit better on the Expresscard, I'll go with it. I don't plan on really needing anything other than my MacBook, so it really doesn't hurt. Just trying to prevent lock-in. Wink

Thanks!

Hello,

The Novatel V740 was just released, we are doing a bunch of testing today (using on PowerBook, MacBook Pro, All Routers, comparing vs. V640, USB, etc.).

We should know a lot more tomorrow (still doing testing).

Xao, be sure to keep Verizon's limited unlimited plan in mind when making your decisison. Vzw has a 5gig cap on data. If exceeded you will get terminated. There's a whole thread dedicated to it here http://www.evdoforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2366&highlight=verizon+terminated Good luck to you!

I would also like to know how the V740 compares to the 595 card. A friend who works for Verizon has let me use the 595. So far I have been quite impressed, compared to my Kyocera KPC650.

I'm hoping to get a card that will work in the MB6000 router, my work dell D600, and my home hp DV6000.

The v740 will work with all the above, but you'll need the ExpressCard adapter to pull it off.

Not a problem, I just want to make sure the V740 is as good as the Sierra 595.

Thanks for the heads up, looks like I won't be going to Verizon then, even though my cell service is with them.

Is the 720 USB the only Rev. A solution by Sprint?

Are there any inherit advantages to the Expresscard over the 720 USB? ie: Range/reception, or is it just mainly a form factor preference?

I own both, the U720 and the EX720 from Sprint. I am using a MacBook Pro. This is my experience:

I live in Frisco, TX, about 25 miles North of Dallas. Both work flawlessly in Dallas. I get average downloads of about 600. The upload is never anything to brag about. Usually 100 - 120.

I have noticed that the U720 gets better reception when I'm in Frisco. This is probably due to the fact that it sits a little further away from the computer. I use my DSL service while I'm at home so this isn't a big deal for me.

I prefer the EX720 simply for aesthetics. I hated having that HUGE U720 hanging off my laptop. It never really fit nice and snug and I always feared hitting it on something.

I like the form factor of the EX720. Although, I do believe it drains the battery significantly faster than the U720.

One additional note, when doing speed tests, the EX720 always shows very high latency numbers but in actual use I feel like the response time is better when addressing a URL. I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, but is sure is fun to play with it.

Hope this helps.
