After reading the reports on this list about Verizon cancellations I decided today to stop by the Sprint store to find out about their card. I signed up with Verizon last week for broadband and cell phone. Today Sprint sold me a comparable cell phone and a U720. I have untill next Wednesday to return the Verizon hardware and 30 days for Sprint. The Sprint hardware was about $90.00 cheaper (phone, modem and accessories). Monthly rates are the same.

With Verizon my signal is -80 to 87 dBm where I'm living temporarily on the fringe of this area. With Sprint it's -71 dBm.

With verizon download is 68 Kbits. With Sprint it's 1174 Kbits. Both numbers come from the same Verizon test Web site.

Now here is my question, Sprint has no high speed broadband here in New Mexico. Verizon does. Why is Sprint so much faster?

When I take my laptop to work where I get a much better connection my download with Verizon is about 650 Kbits with their broadband A. Supposedly my high with Sprint, according to the sales guy should only be about 600. Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining, just trying to understand why the slower network is so much faster (about 17 times faster).

Thank you, Doug

That is very odd. Sprint in New Mexico was run by an affiliate which was purchased in late 05 by Sprint. Sprint made it clear that affiliates that were purchased would be the last to get EVDO but likely would be Rev A. I'm assuming they're deploying EVDO Rev A but it's not on the maps yet. As far as the Verizon speeds it may just be a poor signal or a network issue or you may well be in a 1XRTT area as opposed to a Verizon EVDO area.
