Sprint Launches Faster Mobile Broadband Network in Cincinnati and Dayton

Users of the Nation's Largest Mobile Broadband Network Now Have the Power of Significantly Faster Upload Speeds and a More Robust Experience
CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Beginning today, Sprint customers throughout the Cincinnati and Dayton area join the nearly 110 million people in more than 4500 communities who can enjoy access to the upgraded Sprint Mobile Broadband Network, which provides users faster data speeds and the ability to ultimately use richer applications and services such as high-speed video telephony, music-on-demand, video messaging and large file uploads.

The industry's largest mobile broadband network allows customers in the Cincinnati and Dayton markets to experience significantly faster average upload speeds of 350-500 Kbps (compared with 50-70 Kbps on current EV-DO networks) and average download speeds of 600 Kbps-1.4 Mbps (from 400-700 Kbps). Sprint's upgraded mobile broadband network was awarded the coveted PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award selected by a panel of PC Magazine editors, and leading industry experts.

"Sprint customers in Cincinnati and Dayton can now take advantage of the largest mobile broadband network to send and receive information at even faster speeds," said Kevin Gleason, Sprint area vice president of Sales. "This leading technology gives our customers the powerful combination of mobility and speed to send and receive information so they can manage their business and personal lives while on the go."

Upgraded EV-DO Revision A coverage will be available throughout most of the Greater Cincinnati/Dayton area including:

* Downtown Cincinnati and Dayton and most of the surrounding suburbs
* Cincinnati/Kentucky International Airport and Dayton International Airport
* Along most of the Interstate 75 Corridor from Williamstown, Kentucky to Troy, Ohio
* Along most of Interstate 70 between the Indiana state line and Springfield, Ohio

Currently, Sprint provides mobile broadband services throughout Ohio including in and around Columbus, Cleveland, Akron, Toledo and many areas in between. The upgrade to the faster technology is part of Sprint's ongoing investment in its wireless and wireline networks nationwide. Last year, Sprint spent more than $32 million in Cincinnati and $7 billion nationally to improve its networks.

The Sprint Mobile Broadband Network is the nation's largest mobile broadband network, reaching more than 209 million people nationwide in more than 10,600 communities as well as 1010 airports. Sprint will continue to upgrade its mobile broadband network to the faster EV-DO Revision A technology for the rest of 2007 which will further drive Sprint's wireless data leadership as customers will be able to use the upgraded network to utilize applications such as all IP video telephony, high-performance push-to-talk (walkie-talkie service), multi-user video conferencing, real-time gaming and video streaming as they become available.

Device Portfolio And GPS Leadership

Sprint also has the industry leading portfolio of Revision A-capable devices including the Merlin EX720 by Novatel Wireless, Sprint's first EV-DO Revision A capable ExpressCard, the Novatel Wireless U720 USB device and three PCMCIA Type II Mobile Broadband cards. Other devices embedded with Sprint's EV-DO Revision A technology include laptops like Sony's VAIO VGN-TXN10 Series and rugged, stand-alone connectivity devices like Airlink's PinPoint X and Raven X. All of the Sprint EV-DO Revision A-capable devices will also work on the mobile broadband network in areas where the EV-DO Revision A upgrade is not yet available.

Sprint customers with the Novatel Wireless U720 and Novatel EX720 now have the power to use the first Location Based Services (LBS) capability on a Revision A connection card through an enhanced version of the Sprint Connection Manager software. Users of these cards will be able to perform location based searches to find a nearby restaurant, gas station, bank and other points of interest without having to input their current location. This basic Sprint location and search usage is included as part of Sprint's flexible data and unlimited data connection card plans. Current users can obtain the software by checking for updates using their Sprint Connection Manager, or it can be downloaded from www.sprint.com/downloads.

Plans

Customers signing a two-year Sprint subscriber agreement may be eligible to receive unlimited data usage for $59.99 per month (no separate voice plan required). Other individual service plans for all mobile broadband devices currently range from $39.99 per month for 40 MB to $79.99 per month for unlimited data usage with a one year subscriber agreement. Rates apply to all Power Vision users and do not change in areas that have been upgraded to EV-DO Revision A.

a member from BBR confirmed confirmed this several days ago; I'm glad Sprint officially announced it!

I'm just glad Sprint is deploying Revision A in Ohio, finally; hopefully Columbus, Springfield, and Cleveland will be "flipped on" soon. (or, better yet, just upgrade all of Ohio's currently very large EVDO territory to EVDO Revision A).

Ohio has the best coverage for Sprint EVDO in the nation (in comparison to land area), and with Alltel covering Ohio's east border, the total EVDO coverage is absolutely gigantic: why stop there? Go full tilt with Revision A, Sprint!

edit: ON SHAP! I spoke too soon! Ohio's EVDO Revision A coverage just exploded!

YAY! My dinky little town is covered by EVDO Revision A! Now there's no excuse for me not to get this service!

I hope this explains the terrible connection problems I've been having for the last couple weeks...

well if you look at the map, and how they're deploying EVDO Revision A, then, chances are, you'll get it sometime soon: it appears they started in the southwest, and are progressing towards the northeast.

I just hope they get the speed problem straightened out. Who nows, maybe they're putting up EVDO Revision A in Ohio, AND enabling the QoS so that EVDO can work over EVDO Revision A Smile I doubt it, but, ahh well, one can always hope!

Do you have the latest connection manager? At... sprint.com/downloads

There was a blurb out a while back that for markets with Motorola cellsite
equipment, the users would need to install the latest CM by April. I wonder if
Cincy is one of them and released sooner.

Then again, when RevA released in my market it was also slower for a couple
weeks and then I'd consistently get over 1Mbps.

Location: approx. 1m west of Dayton Mall
Signal: (1xEVDO RevA): -72dBm
Hardware: Novatel S720

I can't wait to try from home tonight (Centerville); speeds are almost always better when I leave the mall area.

2 meg down and 0.5 meg up; not bad, at all! Have you tried using command prompt or ping plotter to check your latency to google or yahoo?

-57 dBm is a pretty doggone good signal; it makes me wonder what kind of transfer speeds one would get if it was -40 or even -30 dBm...hmmm.

Yeah, that speedtest result was from the hottest location in town that I know about. Unfortunately, I didn't think about testing latency. Sad I will run some tests next time I'm over in that neck of the woods.

From both home & work (both Rev A and approx -75dBm), I've been seeing 160-200mS ping response.

You must have been sitting on top of the tower to get that good of a signal Very Happy I can get with in about 100 yards of my tower and the lowest I got was mid 60's. The odd thing is, the best signal I can get is lower to mid-70's, that is with Linksys router in window facing tower. I did a test and got NO speed difference between home and 100 yards from the tower..and beside a help in latency, Rev A didn't do much for me..so that leaves me with the question of..what do I need to do on my end to get faster speeds??

you may want to go to Broadband Reports (www.dslreports.com) and try out their tweak test (under tools); many users have been able to get much better speeds after tweaking their computers.

I would recommend Dr. TCP over TCP optimizer, personally.
